Simmons offers a variety of possibilities for LIS students. While students in the Archives concentration and School Library Teacher program (SLTP) have specific requirements they must complete for graduation beyond the five core courses (LIS 403, LIS 404, LIS 407, LIS 415, and LIS 488), there are no such requirements for students not in one of those areas. Because our array of courses can be overwhelming to those not in a pre-set track, we have developed this site to assist students in understanding the options available to them.
In addition to the two specific programs (Archives and SLTP), this site lays out five conceptual areas that have been identified by the faculty. It is not comprehensive, nor is it prescriptive. This means that students are not limited to taking classes only in one of these five areas, nor are students in these areas required to take the courses laid out in these pages. The site is merely intended as a guide for students interested in one of the areas listed below. As always, students are encourged to speak to their advisors about specific individual advising plans.
The site includes the following conceptual areas:
- Information Organization
- IT and Systems
- Management and Leadership
- Reference and Information Services
- Youth Services
