Like many of you, I love books and I love libraries. I would like to suggest that you not use this as your key theme to your career objectives statement simply because everyone who doesn’t read this blog will use that theme, and therefore you’ll set yourself apart. :)

Also like many of you, I was an English major in college. I refer to it as the “everything and nothing” degree – great for picking up jobs that require a little bit of writing and editing, plus some reading tossed in – but I certainly didn’t coast out of college knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my life.

I actually came to Simmons because I wanted to be a librarian – or thought I did. I took one class, realized how HARD it is to know how to find the answer to everyone’s questions on a variety of topics at a moment’s notice, and decided to keep my day job. Thankfully I had admission experience, and GSLIS was hiring non-librarians. I’ve been the Assistant Director of Admissions since 2002. It’s a great place to work – with nice people who want to get things done. Can’t ask for more than that!

I’m in the office Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 and would love to chat with you about the program. Feel free to contact me at 617-521-2799.

It’s colder than the Arctic Circle – but not for long.

Yes, really…Jason’s post last week was not that far off-base in terms of weather in Boston this winter. This morning Boston.com reported that the temperature in the city at 8:00AM (-2 degrees Fahrenheit) was colder than at the same time in Murmansk, Russia, the northernmost city in the Arctic Circle (6 degrees Fahrenheit). That’s chilly [...]

It’s application deadline week!!

It’s Thursday – our deadline was Monday – and I’m finally able to see (just barely) my co-workers over the piles of application materials that have been flowing into GSLIS over the past week.  Here’s how we feel our office looks (it’s actually not this bad – but it sure seems like it is): All [...]

An update on the Gardner Museum

So finally(!) we know what’s happening over at the Gardner Museum. An article came out in yesterday’s Boston Globe: http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/exhibitionist/2010/01/gardner_design.html?s_campaign=8315 Can’t wait to see the finished result. Sounds like it will be an amazing building.

Happy Holidays!

Here at GSLIS the work week is winding down.  Simmons closes between Christmas and New Year’s, and the administration is nice enough to not make the employees use vacation time – so we get free days off.  What a great gift! Here’s what this means for all of you who are frantically trying to submit [...]

LIS Online Career Fair, Tues. Jan. 12, 2010

The Simmons College Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) just announced that they will be participating in a FREE online job fair.  Although the “official” announcement indicates this event is open only to current students or alumni, we have been told prospective students are also welcome to participate! For further details, visit http://liscareerfair.eventbrite.com or [...]

“We’re going to the library!”

Yesterday I was allowed to play trucks with my nephew.  He’s 2 ½ and very particular about which trucks I can use, where they can go, and what route I take.  It was great fun, and here is my favorite part about our game:  When I asked my nephew where he was driving to, he [...]

Our own Movers and Shakers…sort of.

The Palace Road Building (or “the Palace” as I’ve heard some students refer to it), where the GSLIS Admission Office is located, has been hopping since late August.  Not just because classes have started and students have returned, but literally moving due to construction across the street at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.  We still [...]
