Part-Time Archivist at RCC

Part time 03 Contractual position in the Library

Examples of Duties:
1. Analyzes and evaluates print and or non-print materials to appraise value to posterity; coordinates the cataloging,
maintenance and preservation of valuable material, and the disposition of worthless materials.
2. Prepares descriptions and reference aids, such as lists, indexes, guides, bibliographies, abstracts; cross indexes
materials as required.
3. Develops and implements procedures for the processing, and preservation of archival materials.
4. Performs miscellaneous job- related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree with 1-3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Graduate level
course work in archival management may be substituted for experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
• Knowledge of archival concepts, methodology, and techniques.
• Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
• Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
• Knowledge of the historical contexts governing archival operations.
• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
• Ability to develop and maintain indices, bibliographies, and other reference guides and materials.
• Ability to make evaluative judgments.
• Knowledge of available sources of archival materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS:
• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and /or
walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

Salary: $20.00 per hour
Work Schedule: 8:30 AM to 3 PM with ½ hour for lunch, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday a total of 18 hours
per week.

Date of Starting: ASAP

Librarian/Manuscript Curator in Elmira, NY

The Chemung County Historical Society (CCHS) in Elmira, NY has an immediate opening for a full-time Librarian / Manuscript Curator to manage its Booth Library collections and facility. The Chemung County Historical Society is a non-profit organization operating two institutions, the AAM-accredited Chemung Valley History Museum and the Booth Library. The Booth Library serves approximately 600 researchers each year and contains important collections on the Civil War, Mark Twain, local history, and genealogy dating back to the late 18th century. CCHS seeks someone who is dynamic, well-organized, and can lead the library in the current effort to provide an online searchable collections database. The Librarian will work as an integral part of the CCHS staff collaborating on exhibitions, publications, programming, and historic preservation.

Qualifications:

* MLS degree with concentration in archival studies or equivalent experience.
* Familiarity with archival cataloging conventions, including MARC and EAD
* Ability to supervise interns and volunteers of diverse background.
* Reference experience
* Experience writing grant proposals
* Good oral and written communication skills, good customer service skills
* Strong database management skills
* Ability to supervise multiple projects at once
* Ability and willingness to climb ladders and lift at least 40 lbs

Digital Library Opening Celebration

The students of Candy Schwartz's digital library course will be presenting their new digital library on Thursday December 13th at 10:00 am, in the Kotzen Center Meeting Room. SCoSAA will be sponsoring the celebration so please come to view the new library.

The Olive Ruby Henty Digital Scrapbook is the third in the Notable Women of Simmons collection. The purpose of theis collection is to "animate the lives of early college women...to serve not only as a record of a student's college experience, but also as an entree into a rich understanding of the social conditions and historical period in which these women lived."

Olive Ruby Henty graduated from Simmons in 1915 with a degree in Household Economics. Her rich academic and social experiences are displayed in this new digital scrapbook. Join us in honoring Olive's life and times on December 13, 2007

Mercenary Archivists
