415 - Assignment 4

I returned your Assignments 4 to VISTA last night. I will not be turning my grades in until Wednesday around noon. So, if anyone wants to do the makeover (ten new questions) by Wednesday, August 1, 10am, let me know, and I will send you a copy by e-mail. You will return it by e-mail.

415 - Last PPT in VISTA

It's big, so I did 9 to a page.

Jobs at Beatley Library

From Beatley Library:

We are looking to hire 1-2 additional student workers to work on a shelf-reading project and a media (labeling) project over the next few weeks. Once these projects are finished we could offer them work at the front counter at Beatley in the fall. Interested students should pick up an application at Beatley and should indicate on the application that they were referred by you.

Jasper Fforde reading

Jasper Fforde, author of bibliomysteries (bibliofantasy mysteries) featuring Thursday Next and a wonderful world of living books (it's hard to describe), will be reading at the Brookline Booksmith at 6pm on Thursday July 26.

415 - Corrections to Asst 5

Please change the assignment instructions at the top of the classification assignment to "Assign LC and Dewey numbers as directed below. In both LC and Dewey, include the hierarchical breakdown and the table numbers, so I can see the steps you took. E.g.,"

Thanks.

415 - Bioquiz

I have read (and made brief comments in VISTA) on your biographies, than you very much. Now, I have put a "Bioquiz" into VISTA - 12 questions you can answer for two whole points by reading others' biographies. Have fun.

415 - Next PPT

The Dewey PPTs for Monday are in VISTA.

Work at LibraryThing

I got this from Abby Blachly - our alum at LibraryThing:

I don't know if you have any students looking to work while they're in school, but if you do, send them my way! We're looking for a general assistant to help out on LibraryThing. It's a jack/jill of all trades sort of job, but I'd love to have someone with some knowledge of libraries and metadata. Here's the posting on Craigslist (I also submitted it to the GSLIS jobline):

Thanks,
Abby

Libraries and bookstores final report due Monday, and biography due Wednesday.

415 - Next PowerPoint & last assignment

How about that - last assignment. Gee, and we were just getting to know one another. Anyway, PPTs for Monday are up - in two files - and Assignment 5 is also available..

415 - Next PPT

I have put two new PPT PDFs into VISTA. We will definitely cover "part 1" tomorrow after we finish LCSH, but will probably not have time for "part 2", which is really planned for next Monday in the course outline.

Cataloguing job in NYC

I had the following e-mail from Laura Leone, Systems Librarian, The Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, NY, NY 10011 .

...My immediate need is to hire two catalogers. I need one cataloger with proficiency in German, and one with proficiency in Hebrew. From a cataloging perspective, the job should be interesting since it involves cataloging books, photos, sound recordings, serials, and artifacts in a consortium environment, and would involve both original and copy cataloging, as well as subject cataloging. It's a meaty job for the right person. We don't expect to find the ideal candidate, and realize that finding someone with specific language requirements coupled with significant subject cataloging experience is a challenge. I wonder if you happen to know anyone in the Simmons community (or elsewhere) who might be interested. We would consider a bright library school student or perhaps even split one of the jobs between two part-timers.

Laura sent me a copy of the job description - contact me if you are interested.

OCLC job in Philly

OCLC hasn't posted this yet, but one of our alums works for them in Philadelphia, and knows of an opening coming up in cataloguing (upgrading CIP records and doing some original cataloguing). Keep an eye on the job postings at http://www.oclc.org/careers/ if you are interested.

Cool article in yesterday's NYT

A hipper crowd of shushers (although I take exception to the implication that we weren't hip in the 70s).

415 - Next PowerPoint

"July 9, part 2" is now in VISTA. What was "July 2, part 3" is now really what we will start with on July 9. We will go into the back of the Tech Lab at around 11:30 to do some hands-on practice with LCSH and Classification Web. So, we will be taking a brief break around 10:30 (like 8 minutes), and then another brief one at 11:30. Snack should be at the first one.

415 - Asst 4

I know it's the farthest thing from your minds right now, but I have put Assignment 4 into VISTA.
