We have been having a fun but hectic time at ASIST. Last night the Simmons students and the New England Chapter went to dinner with the LA students and chapter, to celebrate our shared awards (chapters of the year and student chapters of the year). Here's our own Caryn Anderson making a toast.

Ingenta Research Award

Purpose

The Ingenta Research Award is given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information.

Example areas of research include:

* The analysis of online journal usage data to develop conclusions and predictive models which may be used by libraries and publishers in determining future behavior
* An investigation of the issues surrounding institutional archiving, particularly costs, preservation and securing the participation of faculty
* A study of information seeking behavior of readers and/or authors
* The development of future models for verifying the relative usefulness of publications
Other topics related to digital publications will also be considered.


Eligibility

Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars.
Criteria

The Ingenta Award Jury will evaluate applications on the basis of the following
criteria:

1. Appropriateness of the proposed project to understanding of seeking and use of digital information.
2. Significance of the problem.
3. Design of the study.
4. Qualifications of the investigator(s).
5. Realism of the timetable.

Amount

The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. Expenditures must directly support research; the award does not cover indirect costs or overhead. Half of the research amount will be paid within one month of the selection of the awardee; the remaining half will be provided approximately six months later upon the receipt of a satisfactory progress report as determined by the Ingenta Award Jury Chair and the ALA staff liaison to the Ingenta Award Jury.

462 - Readings

I read everyone's readings yesterday - it was actually a lot of fun. I placed my comments as a comment on whichever one was the last reading. I will do this again in November for the next round. I was hoping that this assignment would give you a chance to get the bigger picture, as we tend to focus on the components in class, and also to integrate thie bits and pieces which this course and your other courses and your work experience throw at you piecemeal. Largely I think this assignment is succedding in doing that. I noticed two related points raised by a number of you - grantwriting and business models. I will try to address these if I can. Also, I see that these readings have given many of you a chance to think about the future of libraries in general, and what kinds of changes you should be getting ready to initiate if we are all to survive.

I left class today without my umbrella, and it was not there when i returned to look for it. Nor is in in the lost & found. It really is a very nice umbrella with a small but significant degree of sentimental value. It's medium-sized and black with a green foliage print on the inside. Did anybody find it and squirrel it away for safe-keeping?

This week's music comes from jazz great Houston Person. I am a sucker for jazz sax in small quartets (preferably without an organ, and preferably with bassist Ron Carter) - this man, Stanley Turrentine, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and so on. This (and bluegrass) was what I lived on while doing my doctoral studies at Syracuse. You can find out more about Houston Person here.

Hi all - hope you had a nice Columbus Day. Simon and I celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving, but with pasta, so it was kind of a combined Canadian/Italian thing. Anyway, I have posted the PowerPoints for Friday, and the next assignment (only one left after this). Also, I changed the course outline to reflect the fact that we will be going into the lab on October 26, not this week.

EY has an opening for an Associate on our KWEB (Knowledge WEB/Intranet) team for an Assistant Taxonomist. This position may be located in either our Boston or Cleveland office.

The Assistant Taxonomist will initially be responsible for the ongoing maintenance, evolution and implementation of existing Ernst & Young proprietary taxonomies. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the internal management of the taxonomy and it's metadata as well as taxonomy deliverables, documents and communications. It is anticipated that over time, the responsibilities will grow to also include working with communities to develop taxonomies and to become involved with taxonomy education activities. This position can be filled in Cleveland or Boston.

Immediate Responsibilities: Taxonomy Maintenance

••Responsible for the up-keep of existing taxonomies falling under the purview of the KWeb Taxonomy Program. Activities related to this include, but are not limited to, the following:
o Compare, map, review for structure and format requested and/or required modifications to a taxonomy to assess the impact of possible changes
o Communicate impact and/or concerns to the client o Negotiate which changes will be made with client
o Create, in conjunction with client, plan to implement agreed upon changes, working in accordance to existing any service level agreements / established processes

••Maintain history of decisions and modifications to the taxonomy and taxonomic metadata in taxonomy management tool and ensure that supporting taxonomic materials for each taxonomy are stored in the appropriate containers

••Manage and maintain the KWeb Taxonomy Program databases and communications tools:
o Ensure that the databases / tools are functioning as expected
o Ensure that all feedback / requests are filtered to the appropriate KWeb Taxonomy Program team member

••Maintain Knowledge Web (KWEB/Intranet) Taxonomy Program documentation and ensure that this documentation is up-to-date and stored in the appropriate places

••When required, assist KWeb Taxonomy Program manager in preparing for / holding taxonomy development and/ or taxonomy education sessions

••Act as a back-up contact in the event, the KWeb Taxonomy Program Manager is away or unavailable

Future Responsibilities may include:

- Taxonomy Development: Following best practices, work directly with communities to develop, implement and establish maintenance processes for new taxonomies
- Taxonomy Promotion / Education: Promote use of the E&Y standard global taxonomy, where appropriate, and communicate changes to the E&Y standard global taxonomy to owners of community-based applications

Requirements:

Education:
• MLS or equivalent (MLIS, Master of Science - Library, etc.)
Experience:
• 1-3 years related work experience including direct experience with taxonomy, classification or metadata models or systems
• Be familiar with information architecture principles of database organization using metadata, including taxonomic metadata
• Clearly understand the impact of taxonomic structure and its application on storage and retrieval of content via databases and portals

Skills:
• Possess appropriate knowledge and skills using office systems and software applications (Microsoft Windows and Office, Lotus Notes preferred)
• Demonstrate proficiency to think analytically and understand key issues in a complex situation. Must be able to focus on detail while at the same time keeping the detail in perspective of a larger project
• Demonstrate ability to break tasks into manageable parts in an organized and systematic manner
• Able to prioritize tasks and demonstrate the ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and maximize output in available time
• Demonstrate ability to be precise / attentive to detail while working in a timely fashion
• Be familiar with project management fundamentals is desirable
• Demonstrate capability to create and maintain documentation, including process documentation
• Possess good communication skills including having the ability to:
o articulate complex messages clearly and concisely
o listen carefully to identify requirements, preferences and issues, be open to feedback
o influence / persuade others
o clearly explain and set expectations
• Able to coordinate taxonomy change projects, including coordinating work with team members • Able to effectively work independently with limited supervision
• Able to travel as required (very limited basis)

Today's music (if the classroom projector is fixed in time) will be the album Navicularia, from the group Berroguetto. Berroguetto play music from Galicia in the north of Spain. Galician music is included in the broad "Celtic" rubric, and so they have appeared frequently at Celtic Connections in Glasgow. I have seen Berroguetto a dozen times over the past decade or so (but never in Spain, alas). The Web site (which needs updating) is here.
