415 - Next PPT and a note

There are two parts to this Friday, and they are both now in eLearning.

Also, just a reminder that on the Assignments page of the 415 Web pages it says: "I am happy to look at numbered assignments (1-5) and the OPAC presentation ahead of time, if you provide evidence that you have read the readings and made a good effort. I can only do this in person - not by e-mail, fax, phone, Skype, IM, and so on. Just face to face." The reason for this is that it would take me an hour to compose an e-mail or instant message or file which conveys what I can explain in ten minutes in person, and sometimes I explain by using various tools in my office or on the Web. I understand that this was one of many bits of information that went by on Day One, so this is just a reminder that a) I am happy to look at your work, but b) only in person.

415, 419 - Playlist

This week's music comes from Paul Butterfield, a popular blues harmonica player when I was a young hippie at McGill. The album is East-West. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band included Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, both big names in their own right. More here.

419 - PPT handout

I have put the PDF handout for tomorrow's PPT slides into Moodle, in the week which starts tomorrow. See you soon.

419 - Added to Moodle

I have added, in the section for next week, an Assignment 2 discussion forum. This counts for two points. Wait until after you have done the indexing.

I have also added something called an RSQC2 to this week's section. It's a common tool in blended learning. It's supposed to only take 5 minutes, and it would be great if you could do it immediately (but I understand if you need to put it off - just please do it as soon as possible). It's worth one point.

415 - Alternate file format

I converted the lecture 1 and 2 files to mp3, which will work with iTunes, QuickTime, and so on. Might work better than the wav files. lecture1 and lecture2

415 - If you missed Friday's lecture

I put two big sound files on my Web site. They are .wma files, which means they like Windows Media Player, which also means that they like MS Internet Explorer. So, open Internet Explorer, make sure you have Windows Media Player (or something that will play WMA files) on your desktop, and point the browser at: http://web.simmons.edu/~schwartz/lecture1.wma and http://web.simmons.edu/~schwartz/lecture2.wma.

You will have to fiddle with the volume here and there, but I think everything was captured. You will also need the PowerPoint slide set for this day, which is in eLearning. Good luck.

415- Closing at 12:30

I did manage to get a recorder, so after class I will figure out how to make the tape available, and if youmissed class you will have to listen to it before next week.

415 - Playlist

This week's music is extracted from several albums of The Seldom Scene, a Maryland-based bluegrass band. Few of the original members are in the band currently, but the albums from which I selected represent the Seldom Scene at their zenith. More at their Web site.

415 - snow

Hi - On the chance that we might close at noon or 1pm, I am recording this morning's lecture, and you should be able to follow along with the PowerPoint slides. I will leave a note here once I figure out where to put the recordings. 415 goes podcast!

February 21, 2008

415 - Next PowerPoint & assignment

I have loaded the slides (6 to a page and 3 to a page, take your pick) into eLearning, as well as the next assignment (oh noooo!). Also, the deadline for signing up for biographies is tomorrow, and a dozen of you have not yet signed up. Log into eLearning and into the course and click on Biography, a few lines under my picture.

415 - Study groups

Whoops - I put the study groups in 419 instead of 415 - sorry. Even I find that there are too many places to look. The discussion forum is now in your eLearning course - click on Discussions

419 - PPT slides

I put the normal PDF file containing the slides from both Camtasia lectures in Moodle, right under the two lectures.

February 19, 2008

415 - Study groups

I made a forum for people to use in setting up study groups (e.g., "Does anyone want to work on Assignment 4 on Thursday afternoon in teh cat Lab?") and also for general q's and a's. It's in the top box, above the weekly boxes.

419 - Camtasia

See note and links under "First Camtasia lecture" in Moodle, for week 19 February - 25 February.

419 - Camtasia

Well, I have recorded one third of tomorrow's lecture in Camtasia so far. Camtasia creates Flash videos (with audio) out of the PPT presentation, I think. It's still saving my first project, so I have yet to see. Anyway, this will end up as two or three separate lectures, and in the first one I did not have an opportunity to say"Now please go on to the next presentation". I have learned that it would have been a good idea to have put my telephone on forward, and that my throat gets dry much faster than in the classroom. Whatever I end up putting into Moodle, please let me know if there are technological difficulties.

I have loaded up Assignment 2 files and a dropbox for the final assignment and have sent you each individually three PDFs (if you didn't get them let me know). After watching/listening to the presentation files, you should get to step one of Assignment 2, the concept analyses. These must be done no later than next class, and you should try to get them done before that.

415 - Next PPT

The next lecture's slides are in eLearning, and like before you can choose 3-to-a-page or 6-to-a-page.

Jobs in Burlington MA

Two exciting opportunities in Burlington working for Acquire Media, which cooperates with NewsEdge in providing business news reference sources. One is a knowledge analyst and the other is taxonomy analyst.

415 - Biography

You are welcome to sign up in groups that cross morning and afternoon sections. In fact, you can do it all virtuallyand never actually see each other.

415 - Contact list

The class contact list is in eLearning - in the Handouts section

February 07, 2008

415 - Bio signup

I have put a signup sheet for the Biography assignment in eLearning. On the main page, in the list, you will see "Biography". You will be able to sign up, three to a personage. Once everyone has signed up, I will create a dropbox for the biographies.

Internship - Fidelity

There is an internship at the Fidelity Library. It is a good introduction to a corporate library with responsibilities in a lot of different areas. The description is here

415 - Asst 2

I have placed Assignment 2 into eLearning. Please do not go looking for the books in the Lab yet - I have two that need to be repaired first, and I will take care of that today.

February 06, 2008

415 - Next PPT

I have put two versions of the PDFs of the PPT slides for Friday in eLearning. One is 6-to-a-page to save paper and ink, and the other is 3-to-a-page with note-taking space. Up to you. I have also loaded a handout on Searching OCLC into the Handouts section.

419 - Sign up for appointments

I made a sign-up page on the wiki for project appointments. Please sign up before the end of business (i.e., 5pm) on Friday, so I can clear my calendar of unused slots.

February 05, 2008

419 - Added to Moodle

I added a formal project statement dropbox (projst-yourname.doc), a project bibliography dropbox (projbib-yourname.doc), and a discussion forum for discussing Assignment 1. Please do the Assignment 1 discussion prior to handing in the assignment itself.

419 - Contacts

I put the class phone and e-mail list in the top box of the Moodle course.

Jobs - Northeastern

Northeastern University Libraries is seeking 2 GSLIS students to assist with an ongoing media reclassification project. We are looking for 2 half-time persons who have completed the "Information Organization" course who would be interested in gaining experience in applying LC Classification to an educational video collection. We've recently moved from a closed stacks collection to open stacks and are classifying the videos so they can be browsed along with the rest of the collection.

This is the description . There is an opportunity for the candidates to start out working along with the rest of the staff but to move into more of an oversight/review level, thus gaining some good experience toward future job opportunities.

415, 419 - Playlist

This week's music is Kerden, an anthology of the top Breton guitarists. You can see a tracklist here. I love Breton music, and have seen a fair amount of it live, either in Brittany or in Glasgow at the Celtic Connections festival. I saw some of these people last month in Glasgow.

February 04, 2008

419 - Next PPT

I have loaded the PDF of the PowerPoint handout for tomorrow into eLearning.

Job - Taxonomist at American Psychological Association

Stephanie Willen Brown spotted this one: http://www.lisjobs.com/jobs/item.asp?ID=37297.

February 03, 2008

419 - Projects

I should have said this earlier - please do not propose a project involving fiction or literature unless it is really rich in a WIDE RANGE of topical content (e.g., is really a thinly-veiled social commentary). The English patient example was an exception.

February 01, 2008

419 - Foskett

The book by Foskett is back in Beatley, is now on three-hour reserve, and a second has been rush ordered.

415 - Playlist

The music playing before class was Moving Hearts, The Storm. This is my number 1 desert island disc. I had the good fortune to see this entire set (and then some) performed in Glasgow two weeks ago, and saw Moving Hearts twice in the 80s - here and in Galway, and in the 90s in Glasgow. Their web site is here - http://www.movinghearts.ie/index.shtml.
