462 - Flickr

I put the photos Joelle took with my camera in flickr. If anyone else has photos, please add them to this set. If you need the username and password, just ask.

462 - Left in room

I have in my office a gray/green canvas shirt jacket from Coffeeshop, size "S". I have hung it on the back of my door. If it belongs to someone coming to the graduation party on Sunday, let me know and I will bring it over.

415, 462 - School closed

School is closing at 12:30 - the Library will stay open. No call on classes tomorrow.

462 - Last PPT

Sorry about the late date - but then again, this is probably not something you really need to capture. I have a little bit of a wrapup to do, and I have put the slides in VISTA.

Playlist - This week and last

Last week, in LIS 415, I played music from several albums of The Seldom Scene, a Maryland-based bluegrass band. Few of the original members are in the band currently, but the albums from which I selected represent the Seldom Scene at their zenith. More at Wikipedia. This week I am playing The Oyster Band, based in Kent (England). We have followed this band since their beginnings as Fiddler's Dram, and hosted them on our living room floor in the days when they had no money. Raucous but intelligent, fine musicians, and with a fervent fan base, they do a great live show. Their home page and Wikipedia will tell you more. I was planning on adding a few cuts from the blessed Richard Thompson, but I only have them on my iPod.

462 - BPL visit

I just finished unpacking (flight was late). I will leave for BPL from school at or shortly after 8:45am, if anyone wants to join me. Unless it is raining, I will walk.

462 - Next PPT

Sorry it's so close to the class, but it is there now.

415, 462 - Playlist

This week we hear from Kepa Junkera - the foremost proponent of the trikitixa, or Basque diatonic accordion. I know this sounds like it might be excruciatingly painful, but it's not. Kepa and his band are one of the best live acts I have had the good fortune to see. Another unique instrument in the band is the txalaparta - a percussion instrument (there's videos in YouTube). Kepa has a good Web site.

462 - Inst. Repositories

From the diglib listserv:

The average institutional digital repository spent $78,802 in start up costs, according to The International Survey of Institutional Digital Repositories (ISBN # 1-57440- 090-8) just published by Primary Research Group Inc.

Just a few of the study s many findings are that:

Close to 41% of survey participants purchased software to develop their digital repositories. US-based institutions were much more likely than others to purchase software for this purpose.

The average repository in the sample has been in existence for 2.85 years, with a range of just newly started to ten years.

On average, a drop more than 12% of the content in the repositories came from pre-existing repositories maintained by academic departments or some other institutional unit.

A sixth of the libraries in the sample used Digital Commons software, and 28% of US-based repositories used this product.

14.81% of the institutions in the sample plan to purchase new repository software within the next two years.

Only 5.56% of the repositories in the sample use blogs to publicize the repository while close to 41% use a paper promotional brochure.

Those repositories in the sample that required less than 500 hours of labor per year had budgets of just less than $9,000 US. The largest repositories, those requiring 3,600 hours or more annually, had budgets averaging $145,444.

5.21% of the overall labor required to run the digital repositories in the sample came from academic departments not connected to the library.

The art, architecture and music category was considered a heavy contributor by 4.88% of the repositories in the sample, and a significant contributor by 9.76%. 41.47% considered art, architecture or music to be modest contributors. Most significant and all heavy contributors from these fields were from the USA. Once again, the BA/MA granting colleges were more likely to have significant or heavy contributors in this subject area.

The mean number of journal articles held by the repositories in the sample was 772 with a mean of 162.

4.88% of the journal articles in the repositories were subject to page view limits.

15.56% of the repositories in the sample were funded largely through grants.

The study presents data from 56 institutional digital repositories from eleven countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, South Africa, India, Turkey and other countries.
The 121-page study presents more than 300 tables of data and commentary and is based on data from higher education libraries and other institutions involved in institutional digital repository development.

The report covers costs, budgets, software, personnel, open access policies, marketing, relations with faculty and other contributors of content, and many other issues relevant to those managing or designing an institutional digital depository. Data is broken out by geographic region, type of college or institution, and scope of the repository, defined by the number of man-hours per year needed for operation.

Playlist

The music this week will be Van Morrison's Moondance - which includes several of what I would call "our songs" - songs that were popular shortly after Simon and I were married, and which marked our move to Madison, WI, for Si's graduate degree. I used to know this album off by heart (not anymore). You can wikipedia Van Morrison if you don't already know about him - it's a long and interesting story.

415, 462 - Playlist

This week's music will be the album Fyace, by Ian Carr (guitar) and Karen Tween (accordion, and no jokes please). Ian is one of England's top folk guitarists, and accompanies many well-known artists. He and Karen also play (at least for another month or so) with an English-Scandinavian band called Swap. Karen is a friend, and widely regarded as Britain's top folk accordion player. She is eclectic, has played in all sorts of genres with all sorts of people, teaches in Newcastle and Limerick, and is hugely talented. Karen's myspace and Ian's.

462 - Discussion

Please use the discussion page of the relevant wiki page when you respond to a committee's work. For one thing, if we all post publicly there should be less redundancy and more opportunity to be prompted to think of other things. Also, I have no way of gauging your level of participation in these kinds of feedback activities if you do it by individual e-mail to committee members.

415, 462 - Playlist

Over the past couple of weeks, in one or both classes, I played Paul Butterfield's East West (a seminal album in my misbegotten hippie youthdom, see the Wikipedia entry) and Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks - IMHO the best of his "new" sound.

From Milwaukee

We have been having a fun but hectic time at ASIST. Last night the Simmons students and the New England Chapter went to dinner with the LA students and chapter, to celebrate our shared awards (chapters of the year and student chapters of the year). Here's our own Caryn Anderson making a toast.

462 - Class Oct 18

We have a lot of important things on the committee agenda, so this is what is going to happen. The library reports will come first, then the committee meeting. if there is enough time, i will go last. If there isn't enough time, I will put myself off until next class, when I had myself unscheduled (I think we are a week ahead of where we were last semester).

462 - Readings

I read everyone's readings yesterday - it was actually a lot of fun. I placed my comments as a comment on whichever one was the last reading. I will do this again in November for the next round. I was hoping that this assignment would give you a chance to get the bigger picture, as we tend to focus on the components in class, and also to integrate thie bits and pieces which this course and your other courses and your work experience throw at you piecemeal. Largely I think this assignment is succedding in doing that. I noticed two related points raised by a number of you - grantwriting and business models. I will try to address these if I can. Also, I see that these readings have given many of you a chance to think about the future of libraries in general, and what kinds of changes you should be getting ready to initiate if we are all to survive.

462 - Lost umbrella

From Ashley P.

I left class today without my umbrella, and it was not there when i returned to look for it. Nor is in in the lost & found. It really is a very nice umbrella with a small but significant degree of sentimental value. It's medium-sized and black with a green foliage print on the inside. Did anybody find it and squirrel it away for safe-keeping?

462 - Readings

I will be looking at your readings for the first third of the semester this weekend, and also Assignment 1 files. Just FYI.

415, 462 - Playlist

This week's music comes from jazz great Houston Person. I am a sucker for jazz sax in small quartets (preferably without an organ, and preferably with bassist Ron Carter) - this man, Stanley Turrentine, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and so on. This (and bluegrass) was what I lived on while doing my doctoral studies at Syracuse. You can find out more about Houston Person here.

415, 462 - Playlist

Today's music is Lunasa, IMHO the best irish band currently playing. They've been at it for over a decade, and I have seen them many times (almost a groupie). This particular album is my favourite, it's just called Lunasa, and I especially love the low whistle duet/trio playing on the fourth cut, "Aibreann". I will be seeing Lunasa tomorrow (Friday) at the Somerville Theater - row C, seat 7.

462 - Dropbox

For the past 3 days I have been chanting to myself "make dropbox for Assignment 1, make dropbox for Assignment 1". Of course, chanting this while in bed or on the way to work doesn't help at all. It took an e-mail from a student to remind me. So - there is now a dropbox for Assignment 1. Apoplogies.

462 - DL blog

Andrea has set up an announcements blog for the DL, to save her having to send to me every announcement (which would cause time delay), or having to send global e-mails (which would casue all sorts of grief). It's at http://oliverubyhenty.wordpress.com/ - please subscribe now. If you do not know how, ask the Lab, or me, or Andrea, or anyone else. Have a nice weekend.

September 20, 2007

462 - Page assignments

I have assigned scrapbook pages to everyone. You will find the list linked off the Planning Committee wiki page. At some point soon the Project Manager will develop an announcement mechanism, for reminding you about deadlines and so on.

415, 462 - Playlist

This week's music is Johnny Clegg's In My African Dream. Johnny Clegg is known as the white Zulu, as he adopted the Zulu culture when he moved to South Africa at an early age, and formed an interracial band during the apartheid era. I have seen Johnny and his band (which has been called Savuka and Juluka over the years) a half dozen times - always a treat. He plays guitar and various string things, and does high energy Zulu dances with members of the band. His Web site uses Flash.

462 - Release forms

Please print, fill in, and bring to class this release form from the Archives. Thanks.

415, 462 - PowerPoints

Students in LIS 462 have two presentations which will probably have a visual component, and students in LIS 415 have a bibliographic instruction presentation assignment. Whether you do it with PowerPoint or some other presentation tool, you might want to take a look at tips for good presentations. I Google'd "good PowerPoint presentations" and came up with many suggestions. Two with which I agree generally are this one, which goes over two pages, and this one.

462 - Committees

Well, it took me about three hours, but I have worked out all the committee assignments. I took into account your preferences, and I think everyone who e-mailed me got at least one of their preferences. I tried to balance load, technical and non, and your own backgrounds and interests. For those who did not e-mail me a preference, I tried to pick something which seemed appropriate for the career path indicated in your infosheet. Anyway - you will find the list on the wiki, referenced off the main page. It would be good if you could e-mail each other and try to think collectively about what you think your committee has to do, and then we will go over that on Thursday. Oddly (grin), no-one wanted the vision/mission thing, so I will take care of that, and we will let the name be just Olive Ruby Henty (duh). We will brainstorm a bit about audiences on Thursday.

462 - Meeting notes

Amanda was kind enough to take notes on my scribble and our discussion. I have added a link from the main page of the wiki.

September 13, 2007

415, 462 - Playlist

This week's music is Kerden, an anthology of the top Breton guitarists. You can see a tracklist here. I love Breton music, and have seen a fair amount of it live, either in Brittany or in Glasgow at the Celtic Connections festival.

462 - New text

I have examined the Whole digital library handbook further. It is really about Library 2.0 more than about what we are looking at. That being said, there is something in here for every team, and some good leisure reading as well. So, I am putting it on reserve, and suggest you examine the table of contents for material relating to your team or presentations.

462 - Presentations

I have assigned presentation days for Assignment 1 and 2. Presentations will be given in the order listed. Please keep in mind that if your presentation (including your live DL) needs any special software, we do not have administrator rights on that machine. Either bring your own laptop (and make sure ahead of time that you can connect and display with it) or give me a week's notice as to what needs to be loaded.

462 - Next PPT

The slides for tomorrow are in VISTA.

462 - Readings

It occurred to me at 3am (you know how it goes) that I have asked all of you to read the same things from the reading plan in the same order. By itself this is fine, but the print books among these are on 24-hour reserve. So I have changed the time period to 3-hour reserve for Bishop, Deegan, and Pace. You could also ILL most of them.

I got my hands on the Whole digital library handbook. It looks to be a good collection of readings - I will bring it to class.

462 - Groups

Ok - groups are all formed for both assignments (sorry METS guys - you are only a duo - 23 is a prime number, what can I say). You can get to work, and I will make VISTA drop-boxes. I will assign groups to days when I get back to Boston (am in hotel foyer in Montreal), so once again, if you know you will have to miss a class on a presentation day, let me know a.s.a.p.

September 07, 2007

462 - Contacts and snacks

The class phone, e-mail , and snack list is in VISTA. If your group for Assignment 1 or 2 is "closed", that means that you can get in touch with each other and start working.

462 - Asst 2

I have assigned people to libraries, see the assignment 2 page. Everybody who sent me their preferences got one of their top three, and I have tried to avoid putting people with the same people as Assignment 1 (which is tough). There are some libraries that only have one person and some that have none, so these are still open - first come first serve. Because we shrunk to 23, I have removed one from the list - Historic Pittsburgh. I will assign three to American Memory.

462 - Asst 1

I assigned everyone who had responded to the "preferences" request by 4:10 on Friday. If you have not expressed a preference, you still can - check the assignment 1 page to see what still has room. First come first serve.

462 - PPT for Day One

Okay - the handouts for tomorrow's PPT file are in VISTA, ah, excuse me, eLearning (branding is everything).

462 - Details

Okay - the Web pages for the course now have all of the salient details about assignments. The only thing remaining is the PowerPoint file for day one, which is what I will spend the rest of today on.

I would like you to go the pages for Assignments 1 and 2 and send me e-mail giving me your top three choices in each assignment. I can't guarantee that you will get your top choice, but I will try (you should see the spreadsheet).

Also, if you are know that you are going to be absent from class for any of the days which say "Student presentations", you need to let me know NOW.

462- Info Sheet

The 462 Info Sheet is now in VISTA 4, which you will be piloting this semester. The log in is at http://my.simmons.edu/elearning/4pilot/. There is nothing else there yet, but please do take care of the Info Sheet.

462 - Free conference

IMLS hosts a free conference in DC called WebWise. This year it's all about digital libraries. The conference and the workshops are free, but the latter are limited and you do have to preregister. Check it out: http://www.getty.edu/webwise2007/conference/.. I can't go, since I teach on Thursday and Friday, but if you are taking 419 and want to go, please feel free.

415, 462 - Clusty clouds

The clustering search engine Clusty has added "Clusty clouds", and they encourage you to run your own name. So of course I did. It's now a section on the right side of this blog. Too cool (but one has to wonder at some of the associations).

462 - Feedback

I would much appreciate it if you could take a little bit of time before next week, and let me know by e-mail your thoughts on a couple of things. I know this will take a bit of time out of your busy lives, but the course has changed for the better every semester thanks to feedback from previous semesters.

What do you feel was your own major contribution to the RMW DL?

Who do you feel was/were the "unsung hero/es" - the person(s) whose work went above and beyond the call of duty in contributing to the success fo the DL?

What would you change in the way things were done for the next time around? In this question, you can speak to things related to the digital library project (for example, did your committee encounter any difficulties which you feel could have been avoided, and how), or to the course as a whole and its various components.

Would you change the prerequisites at all (they are currently LIS 415 and LIS 488)?

My thanks
