Job (Could be Pre-pro) - BU Theology Library

From Janet Russell:

We have a job opening, and I wonder if you know anyone who would be interested. It was originally listed as Digital Collections Librarian, but now it has been opened up to people outside the library field. The digital collections aspect is fairly important, and the computing support is going to be partly handled by supervising students to do the work. Anyone interested should apply as soon as possible, because we are interviewing now. Normally an application would go to HR, but because of time, it probably should go to:
Dr. Jack Ammerman
Head Librarian
Boston University Theology Library
745 Commonwealth Ave.
Boston, MA 02215
jwa@bu.edu

I would be glad to talk to anyone interested in the job if they want more information, but after today, email is probably going to be the best way to reach me, because I will be out the office a lot in the next week.

Cataloguing job in NYC

I had the following e-mail from Laura Leone, Systems Librarian, The Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, NY, NY 10011 .

...My immediate need is to hire two catalogers. I need one cataloger with proficiency in German, and one with proficiency in Hebrew. From a cataloging perspective, the job should be interesting since it involves cataloging books, photos, sound recordings, serials, and artifacts in a consortium environment, and would involve both original and copy cataloging, as well as subject cataloging. It's a meaty job for the right person. We don't expect to find the ideal candidate, and realize that finding someone with specific language requirements coupled with significant subject cataloging experience is a challenge. I wonder if you happen to know anyone in the Simmons community (or elsewhere) who might be interested. We would consider a bright library school student or perhaps even split one of the jobs between two part-timers.

Laura sent me a copy of the job description - contact me if you are interested.

OCLC job in Philly

OCLC hasn't posted this yet, but one of our alums works for them in Philadelphia, and knows of an opening coming up in cataloguing (upgrading CIP records and doing some original cataloguing). Keep an eye on the job postings at http://www.oclc.org/careers/ if you are interested.

Volunteer service to indexers

Seth Maislin, local indexer and pres-elect of the American Society of Indexers, is looking for someone to help him update the thesaurus section of the ASI Web site. Specifically, he says, "I am interested in having this information rewritten or replaced with something more current. While the theories behind thesauri-building techniques may be the same, I imagine that the technologies and applications have been revisited several times over the past 10 years." So I asked if he would be interested in students doing this, and he said "I like the idea that one [or a couple] of your students could write something. Naturally their names would appear as authors and/or contributors. Can you ask them and see what turns up? I'd be happy to talk to someone." If you are interested, let me know, and I will let him know. I suspect the time frame is pretty liberal.
