Volunteers Chinatown Lantern Cultural and Educational Center Reading Room

Hello from the Chinatown Lantern! It’s been very exciting and busy since our public opening last month.

During most days of the week, we will have a program running and a steady flow of visitors coming to check out books, read the daily newspaper or use the laptops & tablets. Saturdays are really “happening” with a lot of families coming in for storytelling, borrowing books and playing new activities and puzzles in the Children’s Corner.

With the Reading Room up & running, we are looking towards our beloved volunteers for some help!

-Rotating our book collection to add titles in demand
-Adding multi-media items to collection (audio tapes, CDs, DVDs, etc)
-Organizing our activities & games collection
-Running computer literacy workshops & other programs
-Staffing the circulation desk

The Pike School in Andover, Massachusetts, an independent day school of 440 students in grades Pre-kindergarten through Grade Nine, is seeking a part-time (.2 FTE) library assistant to join the Library Department. Responsibilities include staffing the circulation desk; maintaining circulation, patron and materials records using Alexandria library software; assisting students and faculty with ready reference, online resources, and reader’s advisory; and creating reading or other promotional displays.

The ideal candidate will be committed to the role of school libraries in education and have the following qualifications:
* ability to work effectively with elementary/middle school students and faculty
* minimum 2 years experience in a school library (including cataloging)
* competence with technology and Web 2.0 tools
* some graduate-level coursework in library science/library media studies

Job overview:
MSH seeks an undergraduate or graduate student to work as a library intern with its librarian and Knowledge Exchange team. In conjunction with the Office Strategic Development and Communications (SDC), the position with the MSH library provides interns with a unique opportunity to gain experience in a special library in the public health field as well as to see first-hand the information needs of an international non-governmental organization.

This unpaid internship will allow the Library Intern to:
1. Gain an understanding of the information needs of a global organization working in public health.
2. Acquire day-to-day experience working in a special library with a solo librarian.
3. Gain familiarity with a variety of aspects of library services.

Overall Responsibilities
The Library Intern creates technical briefs in public health areas (including Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health; HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis; and Family Planning/Reproductive Health) and provides circulation, cataloging, and research support to the MSH librarian.

1. Assist with duties relating to cataloging, circulation, and user database.
2. Create technical briefs in public health areas (including Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health; HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis; and Family Planning/Reproductive Health).
3. Process print and electronic documents for MSH’s corporate archive.
4. Assist with reference and research requests as assigned.

Job Requirements
1. Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (MLIS candidates preferred but equivalent undergraduate or library work experience will be considered).
2. Excellent research and writing skills.
3. Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and judgment.
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
5. Ability to work on site at MSH’s Cambridge, Mass. location at least 10 hours per week.

Overview: Assist the Archive Manager on the archive computerization project while performing all other archive functions.

Responsibilities:
-Assist with fulfilling research requests using information found in the physical archive materials searching stock cards, stock photos, client files, insurance files and photos. -Communicate findings to all interested parties.
-Maintain accurate and thorough record of all researches for future reference.

Job description:
The Schlesinger Library has an immediate opening for an assistant to end process collections processed by the 15 members of the manuscript division. Duties include:
* Reboxing collections
* Numbering folders and entering those numbers into EAD finding aid
* Quality assurance of preservation photocopying
* Separating and filing fragile (photocopied) materials, restricted materials, and photographs
* Labeling and barcoding boxes
* Shelving collections or preparing them for transfer to the Harvard Depository

Between end processing projects, the end processor will create container lists and perform other tasks as they arise.

Requirements:
* Completion of introductory archives course
* Proven attention to detail
* Ability to lift boxes up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
* Ability to effectively communicate and work with many members of a large department

Hours:
* 15 hours a week
* Flexible hours, Monday-Friday, between 9am and 5pm
