Head of Adult Services and Circulation, Melrose (MA) Public Library
QUAL:
1. A Master’s Degree in library science; three years of professional library experience; and supervisory experience are required. Exceptions to the experience requirement may be made for exceptional candidates.
2. Working knowledge of classical and current trends in adult literature.
3. Demonstrated experience in providing customer service to co-workers and patrons with tact, courtesy, sensitivity and discretion.
4. Ability to work independently and manage numerous, diverse tasks.
5. Excellent oral and written communication
6. Planning and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail are essential to this position.
7. Intermediate experience with automated library systems and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with open source library systems a plus.
DUTIES:
1. Patron service – The Circulation Librarian should demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service. Responsible for conveying and carrying out the Librarys mission statement and customer service objectives. Responds sensitively and constructively to citizen complaints; provides customer service with tact, courtesy, sensitivity and discretion in all dealings with internal and external customers.
2. Confidentiality – Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of patron records, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Trustees of Melrose Public Library, and NOBLE policy.
3. Professional development – Includes participation in MPL Department Head meetings, including a rotation as chair of the monthly staff meetings. The Circulation Librarian may also participate in library committee work and contribute to cooperative efforts. Outside responsibilities include representing the library at NOBLE circulation and adult services meetings, and attending other professional meetings to remain abreast of current events within the library field as may be necessary. The Circulation Librarian will inform staff of any updates in procedures and policies.
4. Collection development – Professional staff will review media and select books and other library materials for purchase on the basis of established selection criteria and the needs of library users. Collection development includes both acquisition and weeding of the collection. Specific areas of collection responsibility are assigned by the Director. Review and read professional literature such as book reviews, publisher catalogs, etc. to order material in areas as appointed by the Director. Check newspaper bestseller list for items not in the library and order desired material. Maintain the librarys circulating collection in proper condition, selecting material for mending, binding, replacing or discarding. Responsible for selection of library materials and management of library materials funds within guidelines set by the Director. Analyze statistical and anecdotal information; advise Assistant Director and Director on recommended changes based on collected information.
5. Staff Supervision – Ensure that all Circulation staff are properly trained in current policy and procedure to handle circulation issues, including overdue notices, fines, and payments for lost material. Resolve any matters that require a supervisors discretion. Responsible for the administration, implementation and supervision of the Circulation Department and Adult Services to ensure efficiency and maximize workflow. Establish and revise desk procedures to meet the objectives of the library as needed, in keeping with Library policies as set forth by Trustees of Melrose Public Library and the NOBLE Consortium. Schedule adequate levels of support staff to ensure efficiency of operations.
6. Program planning and implementation. Administer a program of adult services to meet the community needs. May include outreach, readers advisory, displays, and adult programming.
7. Liaison – The Circulation Librarian acts as liaison with appropriate local agencies as assigned by Library Director.
8. Interlibrary Loan Services Work in coordination with Reference staff to coordinate outgoing interlibrary loan deliveries, and facilitate all non-NOBLE interlibrary loan services including Virtual Catalog and mediated interlibrary loan services.
9. Scheduling The Circulation Librarian will be responsible for maintaining appropriate coverage in the Circulation Department, under the authority of the Assistant Director. Minimum of one evening shift per week at the Circulation Desk is required, as well as alternate Friday/Saturday scheduling consistent with other public desks.
10. Teamwork – Perform other related duties, such as assisting subordinates with their duties, filling in when necessary in the reference department, and assuming responsibility of person in charge of building when necessary.

This is a 36 hours/week position with benefits. Some evenings and weekends required.
SALARY: $40,256 minimum salary with comprehensive benefits
