Library Reference Assistant

The Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library (http://www.library.tufts.edu/hhsl/) is seeking a full time permanent reference assistant. The Hirsh Health Sciences Library serves the Tufts University schools of Medicine; Dental Medicine; Nutrition; Public Health and Graduate Biomedical Sciences; and their affiliate hospitals. The Hirsh Health Sciences Library is located in downtown Boston in the Chinatown/Theater district.

The Library Reference Assistant is responsible for carrying out all the daily activities of the Library Service Desk in an effective, customer-oriented and professional manner. Duties include providing service to library patrons at the Library Service Desk. These services include providing basic reference help and point-of-need consultation and instruction to users for their information access questions, assisting users with access to the physical library and accessing resources on the website, and assisting users with printing and photocopying. Interactions with patrons occur in person and electronically.

The person in this position will also use the circulation module of the University Library’s integrated library system to circulate material, create and maintain patron records, and create and maintain reserve lists. They will also create and maintain the reserves collection by contacting faculty on a regular basis, maintaining the library’s internal Access database, and coordinating with library staff as needed for ordering new materials and processing existing materials. Responsibilities also include interpreting and applying library policies as appropriate, accurately referring users to appropriate staff members when needed for information, reference or technical questions, and using Qualtrics to create and run surveys for the library. This person will also be responsible for processing the library’s BLC WorldCat Local requests made by HHSL users for materials from other BLC libraries.

Additionally, this position will be on library and university committees as assigned, including the Library PR Team, the University Library’s Circulation and Reserves Team, and the University’s Social Media Working Group. This position is in charge on Saturdays. Other duties as assigned.

Basic requirements: 1 – 3 years related experience; college degree; experience with library circulation systems; MS Office products (including Access) and current communication platforms (wikis, blogs etc.).The working hours are Monday, Tuesday (or Wednesday), Thursday, Friday 7:30 – 3:30 and Saturday 10 – 6.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in an academic or special library environment with knowledge of III Millennium preferred. Very strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated high level of good judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with emerging technologies and related skills. Ability to be helpful and approachable. Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently. Position Focus:
The Head of Collection Management provides leadership and coordination of collection management activities including acquisitions, bibliographic control, collection analysis and assessment, collections budget development and management for collections for the Center for Science and Social Science Information (CSSSI) and distributed Science Libraries. Acts as liaison to central Collections, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Preservation Departments and may be responsible for administrative oversight of the Center in the absence of the directors. Collaborates with collections staff throughout the Library system on best approaches to resource expenditures and coordinated collection development. Manages the acquisitions budget and is responsible for working with librarians and directors to align the budget with Yale University research and curricular needs. Plays a role in documenting collection development policies in collaboration with selectors and directors, analyzing the use of library resources, and managing CSSSI’s domestic and foreign approval plans and the serials and database review processes, in consultation with subject selectors. Plans collections budgets in collaboration with the directors and subject selectors and develops budget reports and analyses, including projections and needs assessments. Stays abreast of trends in scholarly communication.

Plays a lead role in managing digitization projects including: contributing to grant proposal text; working with other library digitization units; designing and implementing workflows; adhering to system digitization standards; creating metadata; implementing procedures for tracking materials; handling of collections post-digitization; and collecting and reporting production statistics.

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school and two years of related experience. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to three years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 3 level.

Required Skills and Abilities:
1. Appointment at Librarian 3 requires five years of relevant professional library experience; Librarian 4 requires a minimum of eight years of relevant professional library experience; and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.
2. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability managing and supervising library technical services with an emphasis on electronic resources management, including acquisitions, collection development and management, and vendor relations.
3. Demonstrated ability in working with: complex electronic publishing environment and scholarly communications issues; negotiating licenses for electronic content; electronic resource management systems; integrated library systems; and metadata and digitization standards.

· In-depth knowledge of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education

· Knowledge of instructional design practice and principles as applied to in-person, online, synchronous, and asynchronous instruction

The Assistant Director for Research and Instruction Services is a senior level management position that has primary responsibility for planning, coordinating, and promoting the research and instruction program of the Gordon Library. This position is a part of the library’s administrative team and contributes to decisions on policies, operations, and library budget. Information literacy and research instruction is central to current library service in academic libraries, which is shifting away from the traditional emphasis on building print collections and resource management to discovery, access, and preservation of digital collections. The Assistant Director for Research and Instruction Services in the Gordon Library leads a team of librarians that links the library to the research process. The person in this position ensures that instruction and reference services are efficient, effective, relevant to the WPI curriculum, and relevant to the needs of the individual user, whether it is a novice or an experienced researcher. This person leads assessment of research and instruction services; engages with faculty and students to foster and expand scholarly publishing efforts; and works with library staff and with faculty to improve library collections in all forms and services.
