The Government Documents/Microforms and Circulation Supervisor Librarian reports to the Head, Government Documents/Microforms Librarian and to the Collection Development Coordinator for collection development/management and faculty liaison responsibilities.

Summary of Duties:
30% Plans, manages, and performs all of the day-to-day operations necessary to maintain the automated circulation system as related to circulating government documents and microforms. Responsible for administering and interpreting the Libraries’ policies for circulation, overdue fees, lost books, billing, and recalls; interviews patrons and interprets complex questions related to their circulation and reference needs. Maintains statistics and appropriate accounting procedures relating to the circulation of government documents and microforms, prepares appropriate reports on the activity and use of the collections. Verifies and retrieves government documents and microforms requested through Interlibrary Borrowing and Lending. Provides assistance to patrons at the Government Documents/Microforms service desk; service may include working some nights and weekends.

25% Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates student assistants in the performance of duties necessary to maintain and circulate government documents and microforms, including the shelving and maintenance of the collections. Performs payroll-related functions for student assistants.

20% Explores, develops, and implements the usage of digital technologies in the application of library services; works with Library Systems staff in selecting and utilizing software; communicates with library and other university personnel concerning digital technologies. Exploration and development may include applying for grant funding as needed.

15% Works to meet requirements for promotion and tenure.

05% Serves as a selector and faculty liaison for the Flagship AgendaÂ’s Emerging Markets Initiative; reviews approval programs; participates in liaison group activities; maintains collection development policy statements for appropriate subject areas.

05% Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Required:
M.L.S. masters degree from an ALA-accredited library school program; undergraduate degree in the social sciences or humanities and/or economics work experience; demonstrated ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; knowledge and experience in using traditional and electronic reference resources; knowledge of HTML and the ability to create Web pages.

Preferred:
Experience in using and knowledge of government documents; experience in providing reference service in an academic library; supervisory experience.

Salary and Benefits:
$40,000 per fiscal year minimum, dependent upon qualifications and experience. This is a 12 month appointment with excellent benefits. An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.

The University of Maryland Libraries at College Park is seeking a U.S. Government Information Librarian. This librarian manages the work of the U.S. Government Information, Maps & GIS Services (GovMG) team; is the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Regional Librarian to the over sixty FDLP libraries; and has collection, reference, and instruction responsibilities in the subject area of U.S. Government Information. The duties also include development of new models for the regional FDLP operations.

Requirements:
- MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent education or experience required
  • Requires 1-2 years of supervisory experience
  • Prior library acquisitions experience required
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of standard financial practices, and library metadata standards required
  • Strong English language written communication skills are required

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for operational-level management of the ESG Acquisitions unit:
    • Hires, trains, supervises, and manages performance for full- and part-time support staff
    • Assigns tasks, plans, directs, and monitors workflows; documents policies, procedures, and guidelines; monitors productivity and quality standards for the ESG unit
    • Monitors budget, maintains statistics, and prepares reports; assesses the data against unit production goals and for trends in budget projections
    • As a member of the ESG management team, participates in developing and implementing policies, procedures, workflows and services of the Unit, in consultation with the Head of ESG and the E-Resources Management Librarian
    • Contributes to unit operational priorities by performing all aspects of the unit’s activities
    • Works closely with the E-Resources, Serials & Government Documents Cataloging unit, other HCLTS units, and other departments (Financial Services, Collection Development, Access Services/Materials Transfer, Binding and Shelf Preparation, Government Documents, Area Studies, HUL Office for Information Systems), contributing information used to solve problems or implement new procedures or technologies
    • Ensures accurate problem resolution for complex order, receipt and payment discrepancies , ensures that technical and service expectations are understood, and performs quality control
    • Ensures positive contact with vendors and publishers
    • Ensures effective timely, efficient, and quality service to patrons by participating in thorough evaluation of current procedures
    • Collects and reports data concerning Unit activity
    • Creates training materials and documentation for staff in the unit, oversees the training of staff and evaluates staff competencies
    • Contributes to unit goals by accomplishing related duties as required
    • Performs duties with professionalism, which includes relating to others in group settings and individually in a courteous, cooperative, sensitive, and collegial manner
    • Maintains the confidentiality of all department and University information
