Title: Part-Time Library Assistant

Hours: 20 Hours per Week/ 5 Days per Week/9am to 1pm Monday through Friday

Summary:

Looking for a team player who can work independently to provide administrative support to the Law Library staff in the processing of incoming mail and materials, and vendor invoices as well as with the processing and circulation of books.

Library Responsibilities:

· Handles all incoming mail, both print and electronic, including opening, processing, and routing materials using SydneyPlus catalog software. Once processed either shelve, distribute or file

· Contact publishers for missing materials and replacements; resolve simple vendor billing questions

· Update all print sets with pocket parts or other supplementation

· Handles physical processing and shelving of new materials

· Maintain catalog schedules and subscriptions for serials in catalog database

· Handle all photocopy requests from library staff and other users

· Maintains circulation records in catalog

· Assist Librarians in delivering materials to attorneys; coordinate pick up and deliveries with Pitney staff; assist with specific projects or reports upon request

· Maintain a neat, clean work area

Billing Responsibilities:

· Track and maintain library invoices; enter data into firm’s accounting software

· Download all online vendor charges on a weekly basis using vendor-specific software; troubleshoot and correct all download errors for each file

· Maintain pending and archived vendor invoices in Library Department

Job Requirements:

· Knowledge of Microsoft applications; Excel experience required

· Ability to learn a variety of catalog and billing software applications; previous experience a plus

· Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

· Ability to prioritize work and pay great attention to detail

· Strong organizational skills

· Previous administrative experience in a law firm, a plus

· Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.

The Harvard Law School Library seeks a student intern, starting immediately through July 31, 2013 to assist with administration of faculty publications in Harvard’s DASH Open Access repository. This is a great position for anyone who is interested in learning more about open access scholarly communication law and policy. The Open Access Intern will gain administrative and technical experience from working with a DSpace repository at the law school’s Cambridge campus.

Basic knowledge or interest in learning more about copyright and publication licensing is a plus, and training will be provided.
Compensation is $11.50 per hour.

Position Focus:

Under the general direction of the Associate Librarian for Technical Services, the Librarian for Digital Resources works independently and uses professional judgment to oversee the lifecycle of all Law Library electronic resource purchases and subscriptions, from trials to payments, including renewals and cancellations. Works closely with colleagues and contractors to design, develop and maintain a unified research tool incorporating print, licensed, and locally developed content for the Law Library’s researchers. Troubleshoots advanced problem reports. Liaises with Law Library departments and committees regarding electronic resources management and represents the Law Library on University Library committees related to electronic resources.

Principal Responsibilities:

1. The Librarian 1 is the beginning rank and is expected to demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities, as defined by the job description and annual goals.

Position Responsibilities:

1. Working independently and using professional judgment, manages the lifecycle of e-journals, packages of e-resources, and other electronic content, purchased or subscribed to by the Law Library. Maintains and manages productive vendor relationships with producers and providers of e-resources. Addresses authorization and authentication issues for e-resources including planning for new systems.

2. Creates records and maintains e-journal coverage information in vendor and local systems. Maintains and manages productive vendor relationships with producers and providers of bibliographic records for e-journals, packages of e-resources and other electronic content. Manages bibliographic records for e-journals and other electronic content. Creates new load tables as required. Monitors quality of records from vendors and develops and manages database maintenance projects as necessary to integrate records with MORRIS database.

3. Coordinates with Associate Librarian for Collections & Access to insure licenses conform to Yale University and Law School guidelines. Maintains licensing details in ERM and other Law Library databases. Sets up and monitors usage statistics gathered through ERM or collected directly from vendors. Troubleshoots advanced problem reports including access and billing issues. Communicates with vendors/publishers to expedite and sustain access to electronic resources.

4. Coordinates with reference librarians and selectors to monitor trials of electronic resource, renewals, and plans for discontinuation of resources. Coordinates with Librarian for Acquisitions and Continuing Resources to manage the relationship between print and online subscriptions to e-journals. Creates bibliographic data for e-resources not included in vendor supplied metadata sets.

5. In the absence of the Librarian for Acquisitions and Continuing Resources, supervises key acquisitions processes and personnel. Will be cross-trained in other technical services functions as required.

6. Represents the Law Library on University Library committees related to electronic resources. Participates in library planning committees and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community.

7. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.

Required Education & Experience:

Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 2 level.

Required Skills and Abilities:

1. Appointment to the rank of Librarian 2 requires a minimum of two years of professional experience; Appointment to the rank of Librarian 3 requires at least five years of professional experience; and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.

2. Demonstrated ability in working with print or electronic serials control and an electronic resource management tool. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot e-resources access issues.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:

1. J.D. and/or public services experience in an academic law library; two years of experience supporting electronic resource activities.

3. Experience working with Innovative’s ERM and ILS. Knowledge of SQL; one or more programming/scripting language; Drupal or other CMS.

The Senior Law Librarian: Collection Development will provide Faculty Research Support, Reference Assistance, Legal Research Instruction, Database and Web Support and Collection Development. This professional librarian must possess a Master of Library and Information Science (“MLIS”) or Master of Library Science (“MLS”) degree and either a legal education (J.D. or LL.B.) or 6-8 years’ experience working as a law librarian. Professional library experience and law library experience are particularly desirable. The candidate will teach a two credit subject matter legal research course for upper level students one quarter a year to up to 20 students, including syllabus development; creating and/or mentoring print and electronic research exercises; developing and/or delivering lectures, demonstrations and presentations on legal research and strategy; creating and/or commenting on student exercises; and mentoring students on legal research exercises and pathfinders. The candidate must be able to work with a diverse population and possess excellent public services skills. Excellent research, reference, writing, and bibliographic skills are required. The Senior Law Librarian: Collection Development Librarian plays an integral and foundational role in the Law Library. S/he participates in shaping the direction and policies of the Collection for the Law Library. S/he works closely with the Associate Law Librarian for Curriculum and Collection Services and the other members of the Acquisitions team to monitor spending and strategize the distribution of spending on the collection. The Senior Law Librarian: Collection Development Librarian researches trends in legal publishing and collection development as well as other academic fields and libraries, especially the balance of print and online sources. S/he recommends readings and summarizes trends to the Collection Development Committee and attends professional development conferences. S/he is responsible for envisioning the future and making well-researched, sound recommendations for change to the Collection Development Committee and for revising the Collection Development Policy to adapt to this time of rapid change in legal publishing and technologies.

The Senior Law Librarian: Collection Development Librarian is an integral part of the Selections team. S/he is primarily responsible for most collections decisions in line with the Collection Policy, the Collection Development Committee, and spending requirements. At least two years of experience working in selections or acquisitions, preferably in a law library; familiar with selections policies and overview of process, experience dealing with publishers, their catalogs and GOBI. Demonstrated successful cataloging experience using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC formats, OCLC, and an integrated library system in an academic or research library is preferred but not required. DUTIES

Oversees the administration and operation of the Inmate Law Library at the Essex County Correctional Facility. The United Nations Library in Vienna and the UNCITRAL Law Library would like to invite students currently enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science or related graduate degree program to submit an application to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) internship programme for during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The UNOV Library provides full library and information services to the staff of the United Nations units and Permanent Missions in Vienna. The collection focuses on issues related to drugs and crime, outer space affairs, as well as translation and interpretation. The UNCITRAL Law Library serves the Secretariat and delegates of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. It houses one of the largest multi-lingual trade law collections in Europe. More information is available at: http://www.uncitral.org/uncitral/publications/library.html

For both libraries, intern duties include assisting with reference and client services, collections maintenance, cataloguing and digitization projects. Interns are required to have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Working knowledge of other UN languages would be considered an asset. In addition, experience or course work related to reference, cataloguing and/or special libraries is desirable. For the UNCITRAL Law Library, experience with legal materials or course work in law would be considered an asset.

Please note that the United Nations does not remunerate interns in any way. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. The minimum duration of an internship is 2 months full time or 320 hours part time.
