The position requires a solid knowledge of current computer applications and resources, and the ability to teach this information to the public and staff. A Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is desirable.

DUTIES: The Librarian will perform community outreach, grant-writing, and budget administration functions related to these programs. Experience in planning and implementing business and career programs is a plus, as is prior supervisory experience. The position requires providing direction to volunteer and part-time staff, especially in the carrying out of business and career services.

The Librarian will be part of the Information Services Department and must be able to work as a team member toward shared Library and departmental goals. The Librarian will handle a variety of tasks in a busy work environment where reference skills, technical savvy, and an awareness of new trends in librarianship are required. SALARY: Annualized Salary Rate is between 50,785 and 73,639. Salary is determined according to the procedures and salary structure of the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement.

QUAL: The Librarian should possess a passion for working with children, children’s literature and technological innovation, strong communication and organization skills, the ability to multi-task and prioritize work obligations and the capability to work effectively as part of a team. All librarians at Moses Brown School possess an MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution; ideally, the librarian also has some experience as a college or school librarian or as a classroom teacher. Our librarians have at least some experience with Friends (Quakers) education.

DUTIES:
The librarian is a member of the faculty, and reports to the Lower School Head and the Director of Library Services. The position includes five roles of responsibility:

  • Teacher: conducts weekly classes for grades N-5 which may include research, storytimes, booktalks, or other activities which have been planned collaboratively with teachers; takes an active role in encouraging appropriate student behavior in the library; conducts reader’s advisory with students based on an extensive knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, publishing trends, and children’s authors and maintains familiarity with children’s literature through extensive reading and use of reviewing tools; promotes literacy through special programs such as National Library Week, summer reading lists, etc.
  • Information Specialist: instructs students, staff and faculty in the use of online resources, including the library catalog, electronic resources and Internet research; prepares resource lists (subject bibliographies) for faculty and students, and pulls resources to support specific units; protects the users’ access and confidentiality.
  • Instructional Consultant: helps students with book selection, reference questions and research skills; collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy in classroom curricula; pursues knowledge of current educational theory and practice.
  • Program Administrator: ensures the collection is well-maintained and current through evaluation and selection of print, non-print and electronic sources; regularly weeds outdated materials; selects materials based on curricular needs, reviews, areas of high need and requests from faculty and students; ensures proper cataloging, circulation and shelving procedures are followed; supervises parent volunteers; collaborates with parent group to organize the annual Book Fair; keeps necessary library records, such as usage statistics; maintains online catalog and patron records; manages the Lower School library budget in cooperation with the Director of Libraries; assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures; sets long- and short-term goals regarding the program and budget.
  • Member of the Community: participates fully as a member of the Lower School faculty and the library team, including faculty and library meetings; helps maintain a positive library environment and school morale.

The role: Librarian Internship

You are a librarian who will help Google organize all the world’s books. You will work closely with Google Books engineers and analysts on a variety of tasks. Duties will range from cataloging items in the Books corpus, identifying items within special collections, to evaluating algorithms for metadata analysis. You will be a member of the team helping make Google Books more accessible and useful.

This will be a paid internship of 10-20 hours per week over a four month period in February-June, 2011. All work will take place in Googles offices at 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, MA.

Google Books has digitized over 15 million books from 40+ libraries and 35,000 publishers around the world. Google Books engineers and staff develop systems to digitize and serve these books, including metadata parsing and clustering, search indexing, information retrieval, and user interfaces. Responsibilities:

  • Catalogue items within the Google Books corpus, including fixing errors in library data and creating new catalog records.
  • Perform evaluations of metadata analysis algorithms.
  • Identify collections within the corpus (e.g., creating “featured” collections, whether by author, subject or source of material) and assign items to them.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in MLS or MLIS degree program.
  • Previous experience with library catalogs and bibliographic metadata.
  • Programming experience in Python, XML and C++ is a plus.
  • Excellence in coursework such as information organization, metadata, cataloguing and classification, as well as familiarity with digital libraries and information retrieval.

The American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUI-S) seeks immediate applications for the full-time position of Librarian, beginning January 2011.

Established in 2007 in the heart of the safe and welcoming Kurdistan region of Iraq, AUI-S is an independent, non-profit, American-style liberal arts university.  In June 2010, the American Academy for Liberal Education awarded AUI-S full accreditation. The AUI-S Librarian will be responsible for developing and managing AUI-S’s first-ever library space, which has been located in a temporary location over the past few years.
