QUAL:
- Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program in Library & Information Science
- Strong cataloging experience using AACR2 rules and MARC format. Ability to integrate RDA rules
- Aptitude for learning new technologies and metadata standards
- Experience using integrated library systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces (III)
- Demonstrated knowledge of codes, metadata standards, and rules, including XML, used to organize data in library systems, and familiarity with internal library operations and workflows
- Ability to monitor and incorporate industry trends and practices into work
- Ability to coordinate work, model professional behavior and offer feedback for paraprofessionals
Preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic library

DUTIES: This position will ensure the cataloging and discovery of materials in all formats. Responsibilities include: performing copy and original cataloging; ensuring the integrity of catalog records; designing and implementing metadata workflows and procedures; developing metadata policy and best practices for collections and the digital institutional repository; coordinating library-wide efforts for the ongoing improvement and functionality of the library’s catalog and access tools; exploring new initiatives and standards in cataloging in support of emerging discovery platforms; maintaining expertise with metadata standards and digital technologies; monitoring trends in metadata services; producing usage reports and statistics; providing training and documentation; coordinating daily work of library assistants; participating in reference service.
Key work activities:
Overall responsibility for providing access and discoverability of all library materials
- Perform original and copy cataloging for materials in all formats using AACR2 and MARC format
- Maintain connections between record information in ILS modules for Cataloging and the ERM compatible with the Acquisitions module
- Integrate e-book access into current cataloging, acquisitions, and ILL workflows
- Ensure quality metadata for electronic resources by performing record loads and making appropriate edits
- Define metadata and standards for the Digital Institutional Repository and library collections
- Establish and implement policies and procedures for deleting records of withdrawn materials from the library catalog and OCLC
- Work with liaison librarians to support collection development activities and provide systems of access to resources and materials
- Work with Access Services to facilitate reserve material orders via the online reserves system
Produce reports and projections
- Contribute statistical data and methodology to the Library statistics module in support of local and national benchmarking
- Create reports and make recommendations to Head of Library Technology Services based on future needs and industry trends
Technology Services
- Employ technologies and systems to optimize workflow and ensure the functioning of the department’s infrastructure
- Ensure the provision of user focused technical services in support of customer service to Library colleagues and patrons
- Investigate, recommend and support department-specific technologies, including implementation of new products and services, and upgrades to existing applications
- Provide information and training to Library staff as appropriate
- Collaborate on access issues with the Head of Library Information Services and the Access Services Librarian
- Ensure ongoing collaboration, coordination and communication with Library Information Services
- Coordinate the daily work of the library assistants in support of departmental needs
Deliver Library Services to the Simmons Community
- Participate as appropriate on College-wide committees and Library standing committees and workgroups
- Model and foster a strong customer service attitude among all staff
- Proactively promote awareness and use of the Library’s collections and services, and pursue opportunities that engage and inform the community
Professional Development and Service
- Maintain current knowledge of library resources, services and issues with strong emphasis on their application to Simmons Library
- Participate in relevant professional organizations
- Contribute to the profession through activities such as publications, presentations, and taking leadership roles in professional organizations
