The College of Charleston Library’s Jewish Heritage Collection (JHC) seeks two archivists for the successful processing and cataloging of the William A. Rosenthall Judaica Collection. The collection contains printed material and artwork that traces the portrayal of Jews by scholars, artists, laypersons, and even anti-Semites from the 16th to the 21st centuries and includes a range of formats: rare books, fine art, postcards, illustrated journals, greeting cards, pamphlets, broadsides, ephemera, newspapers, cartoons, caricatures, etchings, lithographs, watercolors, medallions, stamps, textiles, and more. Materials are in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Yiddish, and other languages. Mostly iconographic, the collection documents the lives, history, religious ceremonies, dress, and customs of the Jewish people. Synagogues are a particular focus, including European synagogues that were destroyed between 1938 and 1945.

Processing Archivist

Requirements
MLIS degree and at least one year of archival experience. Familiarity with processing Judaica collections would be advantageous.
Requires knowledge of standard archival practices and procedures, metadata creation, digitization processes, HTML/CSS and EAD encoding. Knowledge of XSLT a plus. Must have excellent cross-platform computer skills and be able to process collections to various levels of access with speed and accuracy. Experience with content management systems and knowledge of various art media are a plus. Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds is essential. Training and management skills are necessary, in order to teach archival techniques to student assistants and volunteers. Reading skills in Hebrew, Yiddish, and modern European languages a plus.

Job Duties
Works with the project archivist to create and implement a processing plan for the arrangement and description of the Rosenthall Judaica Collection within the 18-month grant period. Creates DACS-compliant finding aids encoded in EAD.
Supervises student interns who create digital files and metadata for ingestion into the Lowcountry Digital Library’s repository. Utilizes controlled vocabularies for multiple formats. Maintains and updates the collections Tumblr and Twitter websites: http://asynagogueaday.tumblr.com/.

Job Duties
Responsible for the arrangement and description of the William A. Rosenthall Judaica Collection, following the standards of the College of Charleston’s Special Collections and the Society of American Archivists. Plans and prioritizes processing workflow. Creates and edits EAD finding aids.

Supervises the processing archivist in creating EAD finding aids and metadata for manuscript materials and artifacts. With the processing archivist, trains and supervises student interns in tasks such as digitization, metadata creation, and re-housing of materials. Supervises the processing archivist in the creation of digital files and metadata for ingestion into the Lowcountry Digital Library’s Fedora repository. Effectively utilizes controlled vocabularies in multiple formats. Works with staff of the Lowcountry Digital Library (LCDL) on selected collections to ensure LCDL standards are rigorously enforced.

Schuyler L. and Yvonne Moore Endowed Summer Internship, South Carolina Political Collections, Columbia SC

Our competitive annual summer internship carries a stipend of $2,250 and is awarded to a graduate student enrolled in an archival education program outside of South Carolina. Projects require a minimum of 135 hours and vary depending on SCPC needs and the interests of the intern. Typical internships may include arranging and describing a collection or a series within a major collection, creating an exhibit, completing a digitization project, or transcribing oral history interviews. The internship is funded by the Schuyler L. and Yvonne Moore Endowment. Housing is not provided as part of the award and must be arranged by the candidate.

Clemson University Libraries announces an inaugural Library Fellows Program open to recent graduates of ALA-accredited academic degree programs. The purpose of the Library Fellows Program is to fund professional librarian work at Clemson University on a term-limited basis. Library fellows are hired to work full time during a single three-year term entry-level position at the Clemson library. Upon completion of the program, librarians will be expected to move on to professional opportunities at other institutions. The program will provide challenging and engaging professional experience for recent graduates and create a foundation of professional experience on which to base a vibrant career.

Clemson University Library seeks an innovative and motivated professional to work with a team of vibrant library faculty to envision and implement the library’s E-Science initiatives and serve as faculty liaison for the new institutional repository. Reporting to the head of the Reference Unit, the E-Science librarian will provide research assistance, instruction, collection management, and outreach services for students, faculty, and staff in the physical and biological sciences. This is a 12-month tenure-track position with faculty rank and status. Clemson library faculty participate in library-wide planning and governance, work in a shared decision making environment, and are active in professional organizations.

Responsibilities

* Plans and implements the library’s role in E-Science.
* Provides needs assessment, outreach, and training for the library’s institutional repository.

This is professional library work with responsibility for planning, coordinating, and serving as a consultant for public library systems in the state or providing specialized services throughout the state directly to public library systems. The candidate will provide consultative services to administrators, staff, library boards of trustees, state, city and county officials, civic leaders and groups, and other interested groups. The candidate will need to utilize professional knowledge and judgment in solving complex problems. Duties are performed in accordance with professional library practices and techniques, and in conformance with governmental directives. Internal and external contacts are made to provide and exchange information, coordinate activities, and provide assistance and guidance. He or She will help to administer a statewide education and training program and assist with statewide projects implemented through the Library Development department. Extensive travel is required.

Examples of work that may be performed include:
o Serves as a consultant and provides continuing education to administrators, staff, library boards of trustees, state, city and county officials, civic leaders, internal agency staff, and other interested groups.
o Provides evaluations for library systems and recommends measures for organization and administrative improvement. May makes recommendations for the enhancement or provision of services and facilities.

o Provides advice and support in the area of working with and utilizing volunteer groups to library administrators, staff, trustees, library organizations, and public officials.

Job Responsibilities:
Directs the planning, analysis, design, development, implementation and operation of all State Library information technology products and services, including telecommunications, data processing systems, databases, integrated library systems, internal hardware and software and technology-based programs. This position is responsible for the technology needs of the SCLENDS consortium as defined in the individual job functions below.

1. Directs the planning, development, implementation and modification of telecommunications, data processing systems, information systems and applications for the State Library. Directs the development, coordination and maintenance of the agency’s information resource management activities and programs.

2. Directs the activities of systems analysts, programmers and information resources professionals.

3. Develops, maintains and supports the SCLENDS consortium Wide Area Network (WAN) and servers using independent judgment and initiative within the framework of established policies. Assists multiple library systems and their Information Technology staff with a wide variety of computer, server, operating systems, Integrated Library System (ILS) software and networking hardware. Manages a comprehensive Evergreen (open source software) online help desk and responds to help desk issues in a timely manner.

4. Selects and purchases equipment; manages installation and equipment maintenance. Evaluates needs and recommends solutions for the Agency.

5. Directs the preparation of reports for management and users. Conducts comprehensive studies and analyses of current systems, functions and operations. Monitors compliance with state IT guidelines and policies.

6. Guides the Agency technology budget development and coordinates expenditures. Manages program budget and personnel; establishes long-term funding commitments. Participates in the agency’s strategic planning efforts by leading efforts to develop and apply technology solutions to support the agency’s mission. Plans for agency technology improvements, guides agency technology planning and maintenance of all technology systems. Develops and implements annual and long range planning and goal setting. Coordinates, designs and/or promotes strategic initiatives to improve agency’s overall operation. Establishes policy for technology acquisition and use; assesses progress and is held accountable for results.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:
A MLS, MLIS, or MSIS, or a degree in technology and 5-7 years experience in a library information technology setting. Experience in information technology, telecommunications, data processing and open source solutions. Ability to plan and supervise the implementation of short and long-range data processing and telecommunications activities and objectives. Ability to plan, organize, direct and review the work of technical personnel. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with users, technical staff, management, vendors and others.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the principles of librarianship, library automation, and integrated library systems. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of planning programs and work activities in a data processing or telecommunications environment.
