The Medical Library Association will be meeting Boston on May for its annual meeting, May 3–8, 2013. This year’s theme is “One Health.” Simmons Graduate School of Library Science students can earn complimentary one day registration by volunteering during the meeting. We are looking for volunteers to staff an informational booth promoting next year’s 2014 MLA Annual Meeting in Chicago (theme “Building Our Information Future”) in two-hour shifts. In addition to the opportunity to attend this professional conference, student volunteers will have the opportunity to network with medical librarians who are volunteering at the booth as well. If you think it is appropriate, we would appreciate if you would distribute this request to your students?

Volunteers will assist visitors to the booth in entering into daily prize drawings, distribute promotional materials for Chicago, and encourage attendance at next year’s meeting in the Windy City. You don’t have to be from Chicago to help! An online signup sheet is available, so please sign up today. You can volunteer for one or more two-hour time slots on Saturday evening (May 4), or during the day Sunday, Monday or Tuesday (May 5-7).

Volunteers Needed!

Are you interested in pursuing a career in medical librarianship?

Are you looking for a way to learn more about the field while meeting librarians currently working in medical and health science organizations?

Then you should consider volunteering for this year’s Massachusetts Health Sciences Library Network (MAHSLIN) Annual Meeting!

We are looking for two Simmons students to volunteer to help check in meeting attendees at the start of the meeting and would be able to attend the meeting free of charge.

This year our annual meeting features presentations by Simmons professors Dr. James Matarazzo and Toby Pearlstein, who will speak about medical library education. There will also be presentations about hospital grand rounds and online pedagogy, and product demonstrations by our vendors.

Where: Massachusetts Medical Society Conference Center, 860 Winter St., Waltham, MA 02451.

When: April 19th, 2013, 7:30am (there will be coffee)

The Friends of the Somerville Public Library is a not-for-profit organization that helps the library and its branches to provide programs, services and materials not covered by the library’s normal operating budget. It is 100% staffed by volunteers. We need ongoing assistance packing books for our Spring/Fall book sales, as well as options for those interested in fundraising, social media and marketing – and suggestions of your own!

We have opportunities at several upcoming events especially the Spring Book Sale;

The vision for the opening ceremony is this: people meet up outside the exhibit hall around the flag of their home country; the doors are opened and everyone walks in preceded by (ideally) a library-school student flag bearer. Like the Olympics, some groups will be larger than others. Unlike the Olympics, no one will need to balance very long country names awkwardly on their heads. There will be flag stands inside the Hall of Exhibits for the flag bearers to divest themselves of their flags, and then they would be free to enjoy the opening of the Hall.

The National Planning Committee and Medical Library Association Headquarters Quarters would like the local contacts to recruit 40 library school students for the opening ceremony. As a student volunteer you would need to meet us at the Hynes Exhibit hall entrance May 4th at 5:00pm, so that everyone would be ready to go by 5:30pm when the doors open. In return for escorting in a group, student volunteers would get access to the Opening of the Hall of Exhibits that evening (normally a $35 ticketed event that isn’t included on the “Exhibits Only” pass). So you know, this comes with food, refreshments, networking, and some nifty giveaways at vendor booths.

BAA/Fenway High School Archives – Volunteer Internship

BAA/Fenway Library is a vibrant, well-resourced school library located adjacent to the Fens and Fenway Park; a ten minute walk from Simmons. Volunteer interns become part of an active school library program team. We are seeking GSLIS students interested contributing time to learning and applying archival practices.

This internship provides authentic archival training which is transferable to most archive settings and a step towards paid internships and beyond. Volunteers process high school records, assist in creating finding aids, and gain experience Microsoft Access.

Ideally, a volunteer determines a block of time, one day a week, where he or she is committed to working. This can change upon by semester. Successful volunteers acquire skills and work experience that is the foundation for formal internships and the SLT practica.

Requirements: A team player, energy, flexibility and a sense of humor. No archive experience is required.

· Attend one pre-Conference training/meeting and tour at the Seaport World

Trade Center (choose either March 19 or March 28). Trainings are from

6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.

· When you register, you will be asked to select at least one shift from the list below.

The New England Quilt Museum in historic downtown Lowell has an extensive reference and circulating library available to the public. The current manager (not a trained librarian) has been running the library for 12 years and needs to find and train someone to eventually take over all her responsibilities. These include:

- Recruiting, training and managing a team of 18 volunteers who rotate to staff the library 36-40 hours per week.

- Managing the reference collection of books, magazines, and ephemera used by staff and visitors to the museum and the circulating collection of books and videos used by museum members.

- Coordinating library functions with the museum’s professional staff.

A candidate needs to live close enough to the museum to volunteer twice a week and make a long-term commitment. The museum has never had a budget for library operation and, in fact, relies on the library volunteers to raise their own funding and supply the museum with regular donations through the sale of excess donated materials. Library training and experience a plus. Quilting knowledge required since the library volunteers answer questions from visitors and e-mail inquiries about quilt history, quilt making and quilt care.

Ipswich Public Library is seeking students with archival management training
to process two manuscript collections for our archives. One collection
contains materials from the Ipswich Women’s Club, and the other contains
materials from the local chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. A student may choose to undertake either one or both projects.
Each collection will take approximately 25-30 hours to complete, with steps
to include sorting the documents, arranging them into appropriate series,
disassembling some scrapbooks, preparing folders and placing the documents
into them. The student will also prepare a descriptive summary, with scope
and content notes and a container list. The projects will be carried out
according to accepted archival practice and will also follow practices
currently in place at Ipswich Public Library.

The projects will be done in the archives at Ipswich Public Library, 25
North Main Street, Ipswich, MA, on the coast about an hour north of Boston,
under the supervision of Reference Librarian Paula Grillo. Ipswich is served
by commuter rail from North Station.

Media Master – We are looking for someone to assist in the development of our media presence. Tasks will include creating and assisting with the maintenance of media outlets – our blog, twitter, you-tube, and Facebook pages.

Database assistance – We are seeking assistance with populating our database. From researching the conference’s participants, keynote speakers, partnering organizations, and potential collaborators.

Research – What is going on in the world of Social Development? Everything! We are hoping that we can stay on top of this broad field with your help. We are seeking someone who will research recent papers, quotes, and community events, speeches that speaks to social development around the world.

Networking – Through phone calls, campus informationals, email blasts, and seminar participation, we are seeking someone who is flexible, outgoing and comfortable representing ICSD 2013 around our local, regional, interdisciplinary and international communities.

Event Campaigning – the ICSD 2013 Planning Team will be holding campus and community events that will generate awareness about this conference and about social development. We are seeking volunteers to help us develop our campaign “What Does Social Development Mean to You?”

Student Expectations
The job will require a student who has excellent skills in library searches, research experience, skill with Excel, PowerPoint, experience with copy-editing, writing and organizational skills. The student will have some comfort working with large datasets. In addition, the student should feel comfortable (or desire) public speaking opportunities; and embrace a role where they will be expected to represent the conference around campus. The student will need to be comfortable with some level of ambiguity and will approach work with curiosity. Finally the ideal student will be flexible, and work well both collaboratively and independently.
