Description: The Reading Public Library seeks a tech-savvy, creative and energetic Young Adult Librarian to share responsibility for Teen Services with another Young Adult Librarian; 20 hours per week including every third Saturday and at least one evening per week. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position shares responsibilities for managing Teen Services with another Young Adult Librarian. Shared responsibilities include: development and maintenance of teen collections; planning and conducting activities and programs for young adults in grades 6 -12; creative print and online promotion of services and collections; management of the teen web page; supervision of teen volunteer and advisory groups; and coordination of school and community outreach.
The Young Adult Librarians work within the Information Services Division and also provide excellent professional reference and readers’ advisory services to the general public.

Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree or candidate from an ALA accredited school of library science.
• Commitment to public service.
• Knowledge of recreational and educational needs of young adults.
• Knowledge of current trends in library services for young adults and of young adult literature and materials.
• Knowledge of reference techniques, services and resources.
• Knowledge of and comfort with social media and emerging technologies.

Abilities: Must be able to drive a car and hold a valid driver’s license.

Salary: Range $22.56 to $28.05 per hour, plus benefits

Children’s/Young Adult Librarian, Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, RI

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, RI, is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic, and self-directed part-time Children’s/Young Adult Librarian to create a welcoming atmosphere and provide high-quality, consistent programming and services. The Children’s Library will reopen in June in a freshly-renovated space with new shelving.

The Library

Founded in 1747 upon the principle of “having nothing in view but the good of mankind,” the Redwood Library and Athenaeum is the oldest lending library in America, and the oldest library building in continuous use in the country.

Responsibilities

The Children’s/Young Adult Librarian is solely responsible for all library activities, educational programs, and services specific to Children and Young Adults, including collection development, policies, and programming. The Librarian is responsible for developing forward-looking strategies for Children’s and YA services and coordinating those service operations with other library services and functions. Specific duties include:

1. Develops, plans, promotes, and facilitates a consistent schedule of high-quality programs for children and young adults, with primary emphasis on meeting the needs of members.

2. Develops and implements creative approaches to serving children’s and young adult library needs.

3. Oversees budget recommendations, acquisitions, and collection development of children’s and young adult library materials.

4. Supervises children’s and young adult department volunteers and interns.

Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in library and information science with minimum 2 years professional experience in a children’s/young adult setting.

2. Knowledge of current children’s and teen literature, reference resources, and practices.

3. Fluency in office and library software as well as current recreational technology used by children and teens.

4. Initiative, flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and good written and verbal communication skills.

Schedule

Part time with some weekday morning and afternoon hours and regular Saturday hours. July and August schedule will be 22 hours/week, with 17 hours/week during the remainder of the year.

Salary: $21/hour

BAA/Fenway Library is a vibrant, well-resourced school library located adjacent to the Fens and Fenway Park; a ten minute walk from Simmons. Volunteer interns become part of an active school library program team. We are seeking GSLIS students interested in garnering school library/YA work experience, able to connect with teens and teachers, and willing to work with the resources used for research and personal aesthetic growth.

This internship provides authentic library training which is transferrable to most library settings. Volunteers answer reference questions, process new materials, perform original cataloging, assist with maintaining the online circulation software. New ideas and projects that enhance coursework are encouraged.

Ideally, a volunteer determines a block of time, one day a week, where he or she is committed to working. This can change upon by semester. Successful volunteers acquire skills and work experience that is the foundation for formal internships and the SLT practica.

Requirements: A team player, energy, flexibility and a sense of humor. No library experience is required.

Physical Requirements: Ability to reach and bend required to shelve books; must be able to stand for extended periods of time and be strong enough to carry books weighing up to twenty pounds and push a cart full of books.

The Morse Institute Library Reference Department seeks a Teen Librarian who is energetic, innovative, technically savvy and team-oriented. As the Teen Librarian you will partner with other library departments in providing materials, services and programming to the young people of Natick. You will also act as the librarys liaison to the Natick Middle and High Schools and other community organizations that provide services to the young adults of our community.

I. Essential Duties
• Recommends goals and objectives for the young adult collection and supporting services.
• Develops, maintains, and weeds young adult collections, including books, videos, audiocassettes, CDs and other special materials.
• Creates an environment that attracts and invites young adults to use the collection.
• Develops special tools (pathfinders, web quests, etc.) that provide access to information not readily available.

• Utilizes a variety of techniques (book talking, discussion groups) to encourage use.
• Provides a variety of information services to meet the diverse needs of young adults.
• Instructs young adults in the basic information gathering and research skills needed for current and future use.
• Designs, implements, and evaluates specific programs and activities (both in the library and in the community) for young adults, based on their needs and interests.
• Involves young adults in planning and implementing services for their age group.
• Performs public service duties as scheduled, assisting patrons with automated databases and other equipment as needed.
• Performs other tasks as assigned.

II. Physical Requirements
• Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching and climbing
• Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed
• Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms
• Must regularly lift and/or move materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges”

III. Equipment to be used

This is a 19 hour a week, part-time, non-benefited position. The hours are flexible; however, the position includes one weekday evening and rotating weekend hours.
