Archives Hub
In the vein of the problems with indexing and cataloging visual resources, I thought I would add this example to the mix. Archives Hub is a site by the archives of UK colleges and universities. It is a portal to 150 different archives and has a searchable database of archival finding aids. The Collection of the month for June shows the work of Aileen Collis, who was Digital Artist in Residence. She created these wonderful digital works of art from manipulating digital images of historical material found in the different collections.
You can see her awesome work here. Clicking on the images at the top of the page will take you to a larger image and information about how and why she created it. They are gorgeous, but I think they would also pose a very interesting indexing and cataloging issue, especially if the indexing/cataloging system used is not robust enough to contain all the information necessary to truly capture all the relevant information (creator- Aileen, but what about the letter's author?, where should the images be held, how do you capture all the information about technique used to create the image?).
And for something completely random, a Jon Carroll column about his recent visit to San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Fot those of you not from the CA Bay Area, Carroll writes a daily column for the San Francisco Chronicle and is known for his random, but insightful columns about any subject he feels like (though the columns on cats are the most popular). It is funny and and a look into the problems with having works titled 'Untitled.' Enjoy.
