WORKSHOP OUTREACH TO SPANISH-SPEAKING POPULATIONS

Thursday, December 6, from 6-9pm, Hagar Shirman and Shelley Quezada will be giving a workshop on outreach to Spanish-speaking populations. We'll learn about cultural differences and how to build strong
community partnerships with the Spanish-speaking community. We'll also learn about resources for providing technology training to Spanish speakers, and we'll start to develop an action plan for outreach at the libraries where we work.

I don't mind saying that Hagar and Shelley are two of the most remarkable, progressively-minded people that I've met during my time at Simmons. This workshop is going to be excellent, and it's hard for me to imagine a library setting in which outreach to Spanish speakers would not be important. To RSVP, just shoot a quick e-mail to Wendy at wendy.brown@simmons.edu. We'd like to know how big of a crowd to plan for so that we can have training materials available for everyone.

I hope to see many of you there!

Marcel

END OF THE SEMESTER PAR-TAY!

That's right! It's the end of another semester here at GSLIS and it's time to pencil in the enormously popular LISSA End of Semester Party. This time we'll be having it on Wednesday, December 12 beginning at
6pm at the Squealing Pig, 134 Smith St, Boston, which is just a few blocks from Simmons up Huntington Ave. Map here: http://tinyurl.com/393o7n (If you walk straight up Palace Rd. and keep on as the crow flies through the parking lot on the other side of Longwood, and across Huntington you'll find it no problem).

We'll have appetizers, a cash bar, and door prizes! All brought to you by the good folks at LISSA, ASIS&T, MSLMA, & SLA.

So stop by and mingle; take a much needed respite; enjoy yourself. Goodness knows you've earned it. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. See you there!

Sean Thibodeau
LISSA Vice President

2008 ALA Conference Student-to-Staff Opportunity

Every year one Simmons student is given the opportunity to attend the Annual American Library Association Conference via the Student-to-Staff program. In exchange for working with ALA staff from a variety of divisions for 4 hours per day of the conference, the student's registration, transportation, and
housing costs for attending the conference are covered. Not only do you get to attend the largest conference for professional librarians but you get to network with fellow LIS students and current professionals--it's the best of
both worlds!

For further information on how you can apply, please follow this linkto the 2008 ALA Conference Student-to-Staff application.
