Seminar on Chinese Digital Librarianship
Summer Course Dates: June 1-June 15, 2008

This course abroad program is designed to benefit students two-fold. Program participants will attend seven lectures and tour five of the best libraries in Beijing over the span of two weeks. The National Library of China will host the course in their newly constructed building for their National Digital Library of China Project. This hands-on approach is meant to give students a Chinese perspective on international digital librarianship. Students will have the opportunity to meet international information and library professionals, acquire
practical knowledge of the technical aspects of database construction and develop additional professional competences. Not only will students be surrounded and exposed to some of the world’s leading technology in the field, but they will also have the opportunity to visit some of the world’s most magnificent places. The class will be taking trips to Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Temple of Heaven just to name a few.

Spring 2008 internship opportunity at the Boston Herald

The Boston Herald Library is offering two unpaid internships for the spring semester 2008. These internships will run for a minimum of 40 hours and will end not later than April 30, 2008. Exact starting and end dates for the internship will be determined by the Herald’s chief librarian and each intern.

It is expected that each intern will work one day per week or two half-days each week in accordance with his/her academic and/or other work schedule.

The individuals selected as interns will gain experience in news librarianship – specifically text archiving, hard copy and digital photo archiving as well as reference/research in a fast-paced working environment.

Young Adult Librarian: This is a nineteen (19) hour a week part-time position. The chosen candidate will be responsible for the collection, programs, services and outreach to teenagers ages 12-18, including overseeing school half-day programs and book discussion groups.

Must have strong customer service skills, knowledge of Young Adult literature and enjoy working with teenagers. Masters in Library Science with 3-5 years library experience preferred.

ARCHIVAL FELLOWSHIPS FROM THE SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RESEARCH CENTER

The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at the College of William and
Mary is pleased to announce the availability of John M. Presson Archival
Fellowships for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. These
Fellowships are intended to provide a summer work experience for students
interested in pursuing a career in archives or special collections. We
anticipate awarding two fellowships for the summer of 2008.

The 2008 Fellows will work on several projects, including processing
collections, conversion of legacy finding aids to EAD, and a preservation
survey. In addition, they may participate in such activities as providing
reference assistance, digitization, and exhibit development and preparation.

Fellows will be expected to work ten 40-hour weeks; pay will be $400/week
for undergraduates and $440/week for graduate students. Exact dates will be
worked out with each Fellow.

Requirements: Graduate students and advanced undergraduates (rising juniors
and seniors) from any accredited institution are eligible to apply.
Applicants should have completed at least twelve credits in archival
administration, library or information science, public history, American
history, or American studies. Undergraduates should have an overall GPA of
at least 3.4. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in archives or
historical repositories, such as through volunteering, work, internships, or
coursework. Also important are attention to detail, good organizational and
communication skills, the ability to lift 30 pounds, flexibility, and a
sense of humor. The Fellows may be subject to a criminal background check
before starting their Fellowships.

Located in the heart of the colonial city of Williamsburg, Virginia, William
and Mary is the nation's second-oldest college and prides itself on being
the best public liberal-arts university in the country. The SCRC is a unit
of Swem Library, the main university library. It houses outstanding
manuscript collections in American and Virginia history, a fine rare book
collection, and the University Archives, which has materials relating to the
College's history dating back to its founding in 1693.
