Building a Mentoring Relationship

Ever wished you had a mentor to give you career advice and talk to you about
library work in public, school, academic, corporate libraries or achives?

Join us for lunch on Thursday, May 1, from 1:00 pm-2:15 in the Kotzen
Center, L-001, to hear first-hand about the benefits and rewards of the
GSLIS Mentoring Program and how it can help you shape your professional
career.

Andrea Wolf, Director of the Simmons College Career Education, will speak on
the topic of "Building a Mentoring Relationship". Also, alumni members of
the GSLIS Mentoring Committee will share stories, advice, information about
the program, and how you can benefit.

The GSLIS Mentoring program allows GSLIS students to ask a professional
Librarian/ Mentor about career advice, explore career options, identifying
appropriate skill sets, and create a network. We will also announce details
about the online resume database.

Please register online if you plan to attend: gslis@simmons.edu. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact Assistant Dean Em Claire
Knowles. I know this is late in the semester, but this information may help
those of you in your search summer jobs, and others of venturing into the
world of professional work.

Sign Up to Distribute Course Evaluations

Here's how it works. You can sign up by adding your name under the course which you would like to distribute the evaluations (probably, a course which you are attending, but I won't stop you if you want to cover a course you're not attending).

Then, sometime before the last week of class, I will place an envelope of evaluations in your student mailbox folder (gray filing cabinet in the GSLIS Lounge). You bring this envelope to your last class, distribute them to be filled out, collect them back, and return the envelope to the black tray sitting atop the student mailbox filing cabinet. And that's it! You're done! You will have helped future generations of GSLIS Students make better informed decisions in their selection of courses.

Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or if you don't even see your course listed on the wiki page above (it's happened before, I'm only human). Please sign up as early as you can so I can be sure to get the evaluations to you.

Thank you very much for your time and generosity and I hope you have a great long weekend.

Sincerely,
Sean Thibodeau
LISSA Vice President, GSLIS Boston

Farragut Elementary School Readers

Hi all,

Farragut Elementary School is looking for guest readers on Friday, April 18th. They are celebrating a "Reading is Fundamental" day with the motto "Opening Season for Reading." Volunteers will spend about an hour reading to students in classrooms (from 10-11am or 11am-noon). In keeping with the theme, they are asking volunteers to dress in baseball gear.

ABOUT FARRAGUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Farragut is within walking distance of Simmons (about 15 min). It's at the
corner of Fenwood Road and Huntington Ave. They don't have a full-time librarian, so Simmons has formed a partnership to help them keep their library running smoothly. Students and staff have volunteered for Alternative Spring Break at Farragut, working on various projects such as creating new bulletin boards, processing new books, and weeding. Students have also volunteered as guest readers in past years, and Simmons runs other tutoring programs as well.

IF YOU CAN BE A GUEST READER...
Please let me know if you're interested--e-mail me at elisabeth.zimmer@simmons.edu. I'll give you directions and put you in touch with the coordinator.

Thanks!
Elisabeth
