Lunchtime Discussion of the DuBois Digitization Project

Sat., December 5, 12:20pm: Lunchtime Discussion of the UMass DuBois Digitization Project

Members of the Du Bois Digitization Project at Umass Amherst will present on the project and creating metadata records with MODS. With a generous grant from the Verizon Foundation, SCUA embarked on a project to digitize the papers of W.E.B. Du Bois in the Spring of 2009. The project is truly a massive undertaking, digitizing 368 boxes, or nearly 165 linear feet of correspondence, essays, lectures, and notes. When complete, however, Du Bois Online will be one of the largest, freely available online repositories of primary materials for the study of African American history and culture.

Join us at 12:20 in the GSLIS Office for a brief presentation and walk-through of MODS record creation in the Oxygen XML editing program with GSLIS alums Jeremy Smith and Aaron Rubinstein, and GSLIS students Abby Baines, Pam Harnois and Danielle Federa.

Bring your bag lunch and questions, we’ll provide the screen shots and cookies!

Volunteer Pen pals!

Join Promising Pals and be a pen pal to a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student!

The Promising Pals program highlights literacy and mentoring by giving students at the Timilty School in Roxbury an opportunity to correspond with students and professionals from Simmons and the surrounding community. Last year, more than 200 participants from Simmons joined over 500 professionals from greater Boston to be a part of this program. Participation is easy!

All you have to do is:

  1. Be a pen pal with a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student.
  2. Exchange at least 4 letters between December 2009 and May 2010.
  3. Read the assigned book and discuss it in the letters with your pal.
  4. Meet your pal at the Pal Breakfast hosted by the Timilty School on June 4, 2010 from 7:30am – 10:30am.
Attendance at this event is required, as the students are very disappointed not to have their pal attend the breakfast.

This opportunity is open to Simmons Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students. Please visit the link below to register as a Promising Pal.
Registration deadline is November 13, 2009.

Independent Study Opportunity: Implementing Metadata is Awesome!

Institution: W.E.B. DuBois Library, UMass Amherst
Location: Amherst, MA

Spring 2010

The Dept. of Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Massachusetts, would like to announce an independent study opportunity for Spring 2010, working on the W.E.B Du Bois Digitization Project and studying metadata creation and best practices development.

The project to digitize the W. E. B. Du Bois papers is one of the few in the country to develop online access to a *complete* manuscript collection of this stature and it presents new challenges in metadata creation. This is a great opportunity to extend and apply skills learned in LIS 415 (Information Organization) and to master an XML-encoded metadata standard.

With any project that is breaking new ground, it is essential to develop best practices to guide the project and to benefit other institutions engaging in similar projects in the future. As part of this study, the student will help us develop best practices for the creation of metadata using the MODS standard, and do research on best practices and content standards for item level description in archives.

Though this could be a great way for archives concentrators to get some hands on experience with metadata and manuscripts, any student who’s taken 415 and has an interest in metadata will learn a lot from this project.

We are limiting the independent study to 2 students so please let us know soon if you’re interested.
