Independent Study: Scholarly Communication

Scholarly Communication Internship with the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries
Spring 2010

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries is offering a one-semester internship designed to promote training in new models of scholarly communication by working on projects to support a National Science Foundation-funded subject repository, the Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse (ESENCe: http://www.ethicslibrary.org) The intern will work with the Ethics Clearinghouse Librarian and will be able to choose from the following projects:

  • identify research ethics materials for the collection
  • secure copyright permissions from authors and publishers to deposit materials in the subject repository, and manage and report progress on the status of securing permissions
  • market the repository through social web technologies
  • other projects depending on the students interest and background
  • The successful candidate will have some knowledge of or a strong interest in scholarly communication issues such as copyright law, open access, and publishing. Candidates should be comfortable in a web environment. Attention to detail, and strong organizational and communication abilities are essential.
