First, let me remind everyone that our first meeting of the Fall semester is scheduled for this Monday, September 13th at 5:30 p.m. in the GSLIS student lounge. Please join us there to hear more about our plans for this year and to enjoy some snacks!

This week I also wanted to mention some of the professional organizations that may be of interest to Panopticon members. Professional organizations can be a good way to learn more about specialties within librarianship, find out about job openings and network with professionals in the field. Moreover, membership in some professional organizations may be eligible for partial reimbursement under LISSA’s Professional Development Reimbursement Policy. What follows is only a partial list of organizations that may be of interest:

Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA). This organization is focused on issues related to art and design librarianship and image management. Student membership is $50 per year and membership forms are available online at ARLIS/NA’s website (http://www.arlisna.org/). The website also includes information on jobs and internships and instructions on joining their listserv. ARLIS/NA is currently accepting applications for their 2010-2011 Internship Award; more information is available online at http://www.arlisna.org/about/awards/internship_info.html.

Music Library Association (MLA). This organization is open to library professionals and students interested in music librarianship both in specialized music libraries and in other collections. Their website (www.musiclibraryassoc.org) offers information on the profession, a resume review service and job placement service and information on joining their listserv. Student membership is $35 per year. MLA also offers a variety of awards and grants, including a travel grant to defray the costs of attending their annual conference, which will be held February 9th to 12th of 2011 in Philadelphia, PA.

Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). AMIA is the association for individuals interested in the archiving and preservation of film and moving images.
