Event: SCoSAA End-of-the-Year Celebration (May 11)

SCoSAA is hosting a Happy Hour to celebrate the end of the semester, graduation, and the beginning summer on May 11, 2012 from 5:30-7:30pm. Join us at the Russell House Tavern in Cambridge for some appetizers and drinks. Appetizers are on us! There is a bar on both floors, so please check both levels to see where we are. We will pick the spot with the most spaces. All GSLIS students are welcome! Event: Interview Master Class (Apr 4)

When: April 4, 2012 from 5:00-7:00pm

Want to fine tune your interview skills and feel more prepared for entering the job market? Want to receive feedback on tough interview questions that always seem to elicit a generic response? If you answered yes to these questions–then we have the perfect event for you! Join ALASC, Panopticon, and SCoSAA for an interview “master class” on April 4, 2012. Students will work in teams to answer interview questions created by our panelists, who will judge each team’s answers to interview questions and give interviewees feedback about their responses. Event: Individual Mock Interviews (Apr 5)

When: April 5, 2012 from 6:00-8:00pm
Where: SOMC*M501 and SOMC*M502 in the School of Management Building

Students will participate in a mock interview for an entry-level position with one of six information professionals from across several different disciplines. Interviews will last up to 25 minutes. Space is limited and an RSVP is required for students to participate in this event. If you would like to receive a one-on-one mock interview you must register by March 28, 2012 at: http://tinyurl.com/89fac3h. Preference will be given to students further along in the program and you will automatically be added to a waitlist once slots are filled. We will notify participants via email more specifics about their mock interview once slots are filled.

Pre-Conference Launch: SCoSAA Reads (Apr 20)

When: April 20, 2012 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Where: SOM 222 (School of Management Building)

Join SCoSAA and ALASC for a wine and cheese party where we will discuss the book The File by Timothy Garton Ash. The File is a compelling memoir of Ash’s experience with the Stasi and the files they created on him while a student in East Germany. According to archivist Elena S. Danielson The File “is a book that every archivist should read.” At this event we will discuss the book and watch the documentary Stasi – East Germany’s Secret Police by Christian Gierke. Although we ask that you read The File before you attend the event, reading the book is not a requirement!

Event: Graduate Symposium (Apr 21)

SCoSAA and SLA invite you to attend the First Annual Simmons College Graduate Student Symposium. The conference will consist of presentations of papers on topics related to archives, special collections, and the many ways in which the study of history and archives converge. Though the Symposium is free of charge and open to the entire Simmons community, we kindly ask that you register in advance. Event: Dominic McDevitt-Parks, Wikipedian in Residence (Mar 13)

Event: Tour of the American Antiquarian Society (Mar 16)

Where: American Antiquarian Society

SCoSAA would like to invite you on a field trip to the American Antiquarian Society (AAS). The AAS is an independent research library that documents the life of America’s people from the colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. This library has rare historical documents and an innovative reference staff that is willing to share their secrets to success! Space for this field trip is limited and requires an RSVP, if you would like to attend please email the SCoSAA co-chairs to see if there are any slots left.

Event: NEA Spring 2012 Meeting (Mar 23-24)

WHEN: March 23-24, 2012
WHERE:  Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut

This spring NEA will host a conference on “DIY Archives” that will focus on the practical application of archival techniques. Event: Wikipedia Workshop/Editathon (Mar 27)

SCoSAA and the Wikimedia New York City chapter are co-sponsoring a Wikipedia workshop/editathon for women’s history that is held in conjunction with the global WikiWomen’s History Month initiative. Our colleague, Dominic McDevitt-Parks (Wikipedian in Residence for NARA) will lead the workshop.  Come for a practical introduction to editing Wikipedia?and expect to get your hands dirty writing an actual article! If you are able, please bring your laptop!

Event: ACA Debrief (Feb 23)

Academy of Certified Archivists Debrief

SCoSAA and the archives faculty invite you to join us for an informal Q&A session regarding ACA. Bring your questions, comments, and concerns as we discuss the pros and cons of the ACA certification process. Attendance at the previous ACA event is not a requirement for the ACA debrief. All GSLIS students are encouraged to attend the ACA debrief.
