Art Libraries
From SLA@Simmons
For GSLIS students interested in art libraries the Special Libraries Association’s Museum, Arts and Humanities Division is a wonderful resource to start with but it is a relatively small group compared to the larger art library organizations. Many members of SLA’s Museum, Arts and Humanities Division are also members of either ARLIS/NA or VRA.
Because there are currently no student chapters at Simmons for the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association (VRA), SLA is proud to serve as liason for their activities. Both ARLIS and VRA have New England chapters and anyone interested in art librarianship is strongly encouraged to participate in their local events and to consider attending the annual conferences as well.
ARLIS/New England (ARLIS/NE) is an excellent resource locally, and they have sponsored events at Simmons in recent years. They are also eager for GSLIS student participation at their Spring and Fall meetings and other events. VRA’s New England Chapter is also interested in GSLIS and hopefully we can increase their presence at Simmons this semester.
A bit about ARLIS and VRA membership: to be a member of the local chapters requires that you also to be a member of the national chapters. This really is not a problem, as it is normal policy for the parent organization to help cover the costs of the local chapters. Remember to submit your membership fees to LISSA for the Professional Development Reimbursement benefits.
Another great resource for library students is Art Library Student & New Arlis* Professional (ArLiSNAP), a new website linking art library students.
