Getting Started with Wikis
First, be sure you have logged in (using your Simmons username and password):
- Click the words "log in" in the upper right corner of the wiki screen.
- Enter your username (usually your last name).
- Enter your password (same as all your other Simmons accounts).
- Hit the "Enter" or "Return" key.
- From the page you want to write in, click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page.
You should be in Edit mode.
Next, start typing.
Two Key Points
- In Edit mode, you have to hit the Return (or Enter) key twice in order to start a new line or paragraph. Add more blank lines for more space between sections.
- Always be sure to hit the "Save Page" button (at bottom); otherwise, you will lose your additions and edits. You can also preview your changes first, using the "Show preview" button; but afterwards, you must still be sure to hit the "Save Page" button.
Formatting Tags
The best way to learn these, really, is to go into "edit" mode and see what formatting symbols other people used.
You can also refer to this list of formatting tags. Where possible, the symbol is shown on this list; however, many symbols cannot be shown here because the wiki software will read them as formatting instructions. So, in many cases, this list can only explain the symbols used:
- Use two "equals" symbols for a Header.
- Use three "equals" symbols for a Sub-header.
- Use an asterisk for a Bulleted List.
- use one asterisk for each item on the list
- Use a hatchmark symbol (#) for a Numbered List.
- use one hatchmark symbol for each item on the list
- the wiki automatically adds the appropriately sequenced number
- Use one square bracket [ ] before and after a hyperlink to other websites.
- Use two square brackets [[ ]] before and after a link to another page in this wiki.
- Use three single-quotation marks to make text Bold .
- Use two single-quotation marks to make text Italic.
- Start a line with a single colon symbol (:) to indent it.
- One colon makes the line indent like this.
- Start a line with two colon symbols (::) to indent it more.
- Two colons make the line indent like this.
Note:
If you are familiar with HTML, some HTML tags also work, such as the line break tag and several of the header tags.
When in Doubt...
Find a page that has the formatting you need, log in, click on the "edit" tab, and see how they did it. Cut-n-Paste if that helps.
