Abby Blachy to Speak About LibraryThing.com

The ALASC is proud to present a spectacular spectacular event. This event will take place in the Kotzen Meeting Room (in the Lefavour Hall First Floor, a.k.a. the Library building) at 8pm on Wednesday February, 27th, and will feature Abby Blachly speaking about the "world's largest book club," LibraryThing.com.

Other than being a bibliophile's dream, what is LibraryThing.com? A massive catalog created by none other than you! At present over 23 million books have been cataloged. But, like any good Web 2.0 application its range of operations have grown and it is now more than just a catalog for your home shelf. So, whether you just want to know what all the talk is about, or you're a screaming fan of the application, make sure to come and hear the rest of the story.

First Meeting of the Spring Semester

The first meeting of the American Library Association Student Chapter (ALASC) for the bright and shiny new semester will be Monday, February 4th from 1:00-2:00pm in the GSLIS student lounge. We'll be talking about upcoming speakers, the continuing Stitch & Bitch, and brainstorming for ALASC sponsored events for this semester. Have some ideas? Want to know more about the ALASC? Want to eat free pizza? (Yes, there will be free pizza!) Then join us on Monday!

2008 ALA Conference Student-to-Staff Opportunity

Every year one Simmons student is given the opportunity to attend the Annual American Library Association Conference via the Student-to-Staff program. In exchange for working with ALA staff from a variety of divisions for 4 hours per day of the conference, the student's registration, transportation, and housing costs for attending the conference are covered. Not only do you get to attend the largest conference for professional librarians but you get to network with fellow LIS students and current professionals--it's the best of both worlds!

As of January 8, 2008, we have selected Claire Cramer to be our Student-to-Staff member for the upcoming ALA Conference. Congratulations to Claire, and thanks to all who applied. It was a great group of applications and made for an interesting selection process.

We'll have Claire report back on how her experience went in Fall 2008, so please look forward to that, as well as the 2009 ALA Conference Student-to-Staff Opportunity!
