LIS 454 Final Project Proposal
An architecture firm is looking to move into adapted/assisted living environments for handicapped individuals and retirees. The firm would like to integrate ubiquitous technology (UT) developments into their building designs. They will have to design spaces taking into account the ways devices will be built into the rooms. They also anticipate customer demand for integrating UT into existing structures with designs for renovations, modifications, and/or modern additions.
They need to know:
Are there any models of UT-enhanced living spaces that the firm can look to for examples?
Factiva: ((ubicomp or ((pervasive or ubiquitous or ambient)w/2(computing or technology or intelligence))) or ((intelligent or smart) w/3 (house or home$ or environment$ or buildings))) and (research or lab or model?)

Here's what I think of as "the core" search:
((UBIQUITOUS OR PERVASIVE OR AMBIENT) pre/2 (COMPUTING OR TECHONOLOG*** OR INTELLIGENCE)) or ((SMART OR INTELLIGENT) PRE/2 (HOUS? OR home or BUILDING? ? OR ENVIRONMENT? ?))
--I then hit FOCUS—(refine using ‘AND’) and added...
(adaptive or assisted) pre/2 living
--yields 3 results (included same "baby boomer" article I had before, one false drop [smart building…], one other good article—this one includes a live project with costs!
--FOCUSing instead with
((adaptive or assisted) pre/2 living) OR aged OR aging OR healthcare OR handicapped
…yields 22 results. I’m gonna review the snot out of ‘em.

- I don't exactly trust Lexis' "SmartIndex technology," but no one loves controlled vocab like I do. Lexis' "terms" index includes the following:
ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES; ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING & CONSULTING; INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES; RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION; SHORT RANGE WIRELESS.
Don't know if that will be helpful. Looking into it

Are any of these specifically geared towards adapted/assisted living situations?

What are the demands & issues of retro-fitting existing buildings with UT?

- Yes... why not "structure$" (and house$, for that matter?) ...are we leery of verbs? (I filled these in above) --jw
- I think we might want to use a proximity operator rather than AND here:
(existing w/2 (house or home$ or environment or environments or building$ or structure))) --correct me if I'm wrong--JW
- ((ubicomp or ((pervasive or ubiquitous or ambient)w/2(computing or technology or intelligence))) or ((intelligent or smart) w/3 (house$ or home$ or environment$ or buildings or structure$))) and ((retrofit$ or adapt) same (existing and (house$ or home$ or environment or environments or building$ or structure$))) Dates:all dates and Sources: all Sources --> got me 5 articles, all relevant in some way but I think the string needs to be opened up to increase recall. there are relevant articles we're missing here. --KE
LEXIS NEXIS (((UBIQUITOUS OR PERVASIVE OR AMBIENT) pre/2 (COMPUTING OR TECHONOLOG*** OR INTELLIGENCE)) or ((SMART OR INTELLIGENT) PRE/2 (HOUS! OR home* or BUILDING* OR ENVIRONMENT*))) AND ((retrofit! OR adapt! OR modif!) w/3 (hous! or home* or building* or environment* or structure*))
Yields 16 results. I’m seeing a lot of repeat—probably too much. And I’m leery of the newcomers. If the string isn’t botched, I may have already scraped all I can out of these particular Lex-Nex sources. And there may not be more worthwhile sources in L-N.

Are there any special concerns for UT within existing buildings?
(brick, wirless hotspots and dead zones, etc)
Kjersten Factiva: ((dead w/1 zone$1) same (wireless or wifi)) and (((building OR construction) w/2 materials) OR brick OR metal OR concrete OR dry?wall)
What are the types of current ubiquitous computing tools/products that are of use to an adapted/assisted living environment?
Some producty terms to consider:
- Modular (3w) component*
…near architecture/smart house terms (?)
- Mass(w)Customiz*
- Home automation
- Home monitoring
- RFID (duh)
- sensor*
- assistive technolog$3
- other devices: cameras, barcode scanners/readers
[please add-to/mod this list--jw]
- building-automation --EB
*Quick notes:
- the search term (house$) is not inclusive of the word "housing"; (hous$) perhaps better?
- modul* gets modules as well as modularity/modular
- the search ("activities of daily living" OR ADLs) garnered 24 articles when limited to a single day. Might be a useful term for narrowing otherwise-broad searches to handicap/ assisted living. --EB
Kjersten's Factiva:
((home w/1 (automation or monitoring)) same (product$1or device$1 or system$1)) and (caregiv* or (baby w/1 boomer$1) or (senior w/1 citizen$1) or assisted or assistive)
Dates: past 6 months
Josh's factiva sensor-search:
((sensor$) same (product$1 or device$1 or system$1)) and (caregiv* or (baby w/1 boomer$1) or (senior w/1 citizen$1) or assisted or assistive) and ((smart OR intelligent) adj (house$ OR home$ OR environment$ OR buildings))
--like 14 results in the last year
I got lots of good information here, especially in terms of answering question 1, and some of 2. But we are not picking up costs or pricing. I found 1 maybe 2 articles in the bunch that mention costs going up or down, but think we hit a wall today in terms of what Factiva (& its ilk) can provide. I'll underline the "generalities" since that's what I have... I just wish I had more.
Old Search: (sensor$ and ((adaptive OR assisted) adj living)) AND ((smart OR intelligent) adj (house$ OR home$ OR environment$ OR buildings)) …limited to last 2 years, brought 12 results. All "relevant" but general.
Emily's factiva modularity search
modul* same ((smart OR intelligent OR responsive OR persuasive) adj3 (hous$ OR home$ OR environment$1 OR building$1 OR space$ OR structure$1))
...in the past 6 months, gets 69 results. Not particularly surgical; perhaps implement a "NOT" operator? I have to go to my workshop now. --EB
NEXIS: (((UBIQUITOUS OR PERVASIVE OR AMBIENT) pre/2 (COMPUTING OR TECHONOLOG*** OR INTELLIGENCE)) or ((SMART OR INTELLIGENT) PRE/2 (HOUS! OR home* or BUILDING* OR ENVIRONMENT*))) AND (product* or announce! OR release*)
--291 results?! needs be tighter. --Josh
What are estimated cost ranges for these products, if any?
Josh's factiva sensor-search: (sensor$ and ((adaptive OR assisted) adj living)) AND ((smart OR intelligent) adj (house$ OR home$ OR environment$ OR buildings)) …limited to last 2 years, brings 12 results. All "relevant" in a general way. However, they're newsy articles, and tend to be weak on specifics. Tomorrow I'll try adding:
- cost*
- price$ or pricing
- actually, this search may be pigeonholing us in adaptive/assisted living, when it could be broader. Arg. so many concepts. --jw
In literature discussing UT products, are there any suggestions that long-term maintenance costs might be a crucial consideration for certain products? If so, for which products?
Josh's RFID-search: (LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES, PEOPLE)
rfid near15 (home$ OR house$ OR buildings OR residential) near10 (elder* OR senior$ OR handicapped OR disab*)
--one hit, last 6 mos
--9 hits, last 2 years, includes conference stuff
-- ! -- senior$ and home$ lead to businessy false drops.
This string is bad. At least in Factiva. I'm sweatin' for some more relevant Sources (and yet my fingers are freezing)
rfid AND (home$ OR house$ OR buildings OR residential)
--900+
rfid AND (home$ OR house$ OR buildings OR residential) AND (install* OR construct*) --over 3 mos, yields 273 ---including interesting results on Korean & malaysian "ubicities"
rfid AND (home$ OR house$ OR buildings OR residential) SAME (install* OR construct*) --84 hits
(rfid near30 (install* or cost* or price$1 or charge$1)) and (in=i8371 OR in=i501) architecture & construction industries --didn't get any.
atleast3 rfid AND ((home$ OR house$ OR buildings OR residential) near7 (install* OR construct*)) --gets too many results totally irrelevant to construction
Emily's Thoughts:
(rfid OR (radio w/1 frequency w/1 identifi$))
(adaptive$ or assistive or retir? or handicap? or medical or (health w/1 care))
(elder* OR senior$ OR handicapped OR disab*)
Emily's Search String, 6 months, 32 results:
atleast3 rfid AND (((assistive or handicap$ or (health w/1 care)) OR (elder$ OR senior$ OR handicapped OR disab$)) same (hous$ OR home$ OR "activities of daily living" OR ADLs)) NOT (rfid same hospital$)
- ehhh... false alarm guys. 3 results were relevant, and only slightly. what exactly are we going for in results here, anyway? i take it we're looking for specific products: brand & product names. am i right? --Em
