Scope

Libraries that have incorporated user-based tagging into their information services, or that use tags to augment search. For LibraryThing applied to OPACs, see Service mashup.

Libraries

The Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) system offers Catalog Search Cloud to search the catalog. Tags represent the popularity of searches against the AADL catalog. It provides a link to the top 10 tags, 10 most recent tags, 10 random tags and last 10 tags reviewed. When you select a particular resource, it will provide a list of resources that share the same tag. The "Catalog Search Cloud" search is misleading because tags are not one Search option, however, is a great way to browse the library collection and find related resources. --Lopes2 18:50, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
H20 Playlist is Harvard Law School's shared space for storing, tagging and sharing links. There are archives of course material, discussion groups and peer networks. Playlists are themed groups of links. Links can be tagged by the playlist creator like in delicious and they can also have item descriptions (sentences). The idea of playlists is really interesting and more thorough than delicious' clusters. You can view items by a certain author, items that are derived from other items, items that have similiar tags. Each playlist can have main and subtopics. This is open for anyone who wants to participate. --Brownw 20:33, 21 November 2006 (EST)
The Library of Congress, The Powerhouse Museum, and the Brooklyn Public Library all participate in this project with Flickr, started in June of 2007. Flickr users are able to browse selections from the collections of over 1 million images and participate in the description of those images by tagging them. How are tags being moderated? With the following rule from the front page of The Commons: "Any Flickr member is able to add tags or comment on these collections. If you're a dork about it, shame on you. This is for the good of humanity, dude!!" Other cultural institutions may be allowed to participate in this exciting project in the future. --Astolfi 15:03, 15 Frebruary 2008 (EST)
Similar to PennTags, users with accounts can tag anything, including external data if they use the MTagger Browsr Bookmark. Anyone can see tags and use the tag cloud for searching. --Schwartz 12:51, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
The University of Pennsylvania offers PennTags, which is "a social bookmarking tool for locating, organizing, and sharing your favorite online resources". Websites, journal articles, and OPAC records can all be tagged. Users can even create RSS feeds for tags, so that each time that a tag is used, the tagger will be notified. --Campbej2 15:30, 4 October 2006 (EDT)
