Weekly Podcast

Listen to the first week podcast which is available on the class podcast page, for download, or by subscription.

Weekly Activities

By the end of the week you need to have a:

  • Twitter account - this is where you will post short messages each week that let others in the class know what you think - very succinctly - about what you are learning. Find out more about Twitter by downloading this .pdf file.
  • Blog URL - your blog is where you will write longer personal reflections and notes about what you are learning in this class. The blog is not meant to be a place for you to discuss ideas with classmates. Instead it's for your own thoughts and reflections.
  • Google account - once you setup that account you need to get started with Google Reader. An RSS reader allows you to subscribe to various resources and find out when those resources are updated by having that information delivered to your computer. This week you are going to get started learning how to use RSS with Google Reader. You can find out how to use Google Reader by downloading this .pdf file.
  • del.icio.us - del.icio.us is what's known as a social bookmarking tool. It's a site where you can link to sites that you find that are of topics of interest. For this class you will setup a del.icio.us account for keeping track of sites that relate to integrating technology into the school library and classroom. You can find out more about setting up a del.icio.us account by downloading the .pdf file.
  • Podcatcher - - a podcatcher is where you subscribe to and download audio or video podcasts. For this class you are going to use iTunes (unless you already have another podcatcher.) To learn more about setting up iTunes for podcatching download the podcatching .pdf file.
  • Skype account - Skype allows you to talk to people from computer to computer. It's like making a phone call except you don't use the phone. Learn more about Skype by downloading this .pdf file.

After the above accounts and URLs are setup:

  • Create a wiki profile - a wiki is a piece of web-based software that allows people to build content together. The class site you are on now uses wiki software. For the first week of class you need to familiarize yourself with the class wiki and find out how the software works. As a part of that familiarizing and finding out you need to create an introduction to yourself on the wiki. Your wiki introduction should include your Twitter, Google, Skype usernames. It should also have the URL of your del.icio.us page and the URL of your blog. Read more on using the class wiki by downloading the .pdf instructions.
  • Subscribe to your classmate's, and my, blog and deli.cio.us feeds with Google Reader.
  • Friend your classmates, and me, on Twitter.
  • Subscribe to the class podcast that I'll produce every week.
  • Add your classmates, and me, to your Skype buddy list.

Skype Call Sign-up

Introductory Skype Calls Periodically through the class we'll have real-time Skype conversations in small groups to talk about class content. These calls will be recorded and uploaded to the class podcast space. This first call will be to check-in with everyone to see how things are going and to answer any initial questions about the class, the format, and the content.

If you need to buy a headset the basic Logitech headset will do the trick. It's available at Amazon (and at many other places too I'm sure.)

Five people, including me, can be on a Skype call at once. Sign-up for one of the Skype times below:
