What is YouTube?

YouTube is a video sharing website that anyone can watch. It has over 70 million views and has 65,000 videos uploaded daily. YouTube was recently bought by Google for 1.65 billion dollars. To upload videos, users must register. Related videos are attached to the screen using related titles and tags. Users can also post responses to videos and their authors.
Several singers and broadcasters have been signed to recording contracts based on their submissions on YouTube.

Features of YouTube

YouTube has begun to develop technology to catch copyright infringement.
Specific channels and communities can be subscribed to.
YouTube does not need any additional software

Uses of YouTube in a school library

Course specific topics can be search for and shared with classes.
Students can use YouTube to upload and share group work. Very important in a school with limited server space.
Videos can be critiqued for style and format.
Online training and orientation videos could be uploaded.
