This portion is still under construction not all information may be currentAMERICorps - PAID internship
Americorps Student Leaders in Service is a part-time Americorps program sponsored by the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Campus Compacts and facilitated through the Scott/Ross Center for Community Service at Simmons. Americorps Student Leaders in Service who perform 300 hours of volunteer work within one year receive a $1000 education award. The $1000 education award is a voucher that can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or to repay qualified student loans. Field placement and federal work study hours can count towards the 300 hours of service. The only volunteer activities that are not allowed are those prohibited by Americorps, including lobbying, political, religious and some advocacy activities.
Simmons currently has 30 student enrolled in the Americorps Student Leaders in Service program and additional spaces may become available at the beginning of each semester. Interested students should contact Michelle Sterk Barrett, Graduate Community Engagement Coordinator, in the Scott/Ross Center for Community Service at sterk@simmons.edu.
GSLIS/Farragut School Library Partnership, Mission Hill
Over the past five years, the GSLIS and Farragut School Library partnership has continued to grow and is now entering its sixth year of collaboration. This has been a major focus of GSLIS community outreach efforts. The Farragut School is a k – 5 Boston Public School located off of Huntington Avenue within a 10 minute walk of the Simmons campus. The Farragut School is a long time partner of the Scott/Ross Center and the site of our America Reads and America Counts programs.
The GSLIS/Farragut partnership in the past has coordinated a children’s book drive, guest reader’s days, and an alternative spring break initiative. During spring break there will be opportunities to work in the library weeding, sorting, and processing new books along with promoting reading and guest reading in classrooms. This is an excellent opportunity to spend some time in an elementary school library while providing much needed assistance to the librarian and school. This partnership has been vital in the operation of the library. We are looking for GSLIS students who would like to join a committee made up of the Farragut School staff, GSLIS staff, and SRC staff. The committee meets monthly.
Mission Hill School, Roxbury
The Mission Hill School, a progressive Boston pilot school that is known world-wide for its educational innovation, serves approximately 170 children in grades k-8. Classrooms consist of no more than 20 students, and are multi-age; most children spend two years with the same teacher.
This school has a diverse 10,000 volume library which is outdated and partially catalogued and is in the process of trying to get fully automated with the Sagebrush catalog system. Last year, a Simmons GSLIS alumna completed an assessment of needs. A GSLIS student created a project to reorganize the layout of the library. This fall they will concurrently undertake collection development, selection policy, a weeding list, book repair, establishing a computerized system to check out and return books, and continue library organization. Students who are interested in volunteering on a regular basis will be able to take on a leadership role and work on a project matched to their interests. We are also hoping to hold a one day service event in the fall for GSLIS students to help complete some of the above tasks.
The Mission Hill School provides GSLIS students the opportunity to be in a non-typical school setting open to different ideas and offering the possibility for volunteers to make a significant impact. Students interested in volunteering or helping to plan the one day service event should contact Michelle Sterk Barrett for more details.
