Katie Cerasale-Messina started her career in libraries when she was 14, volunteering at the public library in the town she grew up in. She holds a B.A. from Suffolk University in European History with a minor in English Literature. While at Suffolk she held an internship at the Museum of Science library. As a result, she applied to the dual degree program for archives and history at Simmons GSLIS; however, her boss at the Museum’s library inspired her to go into youth services. This fall she started a new job as the media specialist at the AC Whelan Elementary School. Her presentation on collaborating with teachers was given as part of the Massachusetts School Library Association Conference at Simmons College on April 26, 2008.
Deborah Jordan graduated from Simmons in 1989 with a dual masters (LIS and Education). She worked one year at St. Mary’s High School in Lynn and then packed her bags for Hawaii. She worked in a combined public and high school library for 4 years on Oahu and moved to Maui, working for 3 years in “the oldest school west of the Rockies,” Lahainaluna High School. She moved back to New England in 1997 and worked at Mansfield High School for 6 years. She is now in her 5th year at Walpole High School. Her presentation on bringing guest lecturers to the library was given as part of the Massachusetts School Library Association Conference at Simmons College on April 26, 2008.
Christine Drew, M.L.S., is Manager of Instruction & Outreach at Gordon Library, Worcester Polytechnic Institute in central Massachusetts. Christine serves as IT liaison to various academic departments. She coordinates the information literacy program at WPI, leads instruction sessions and workshops on a variety of research topics, and has been hosting a library podcast,Audio & Video to Go, since August 2005. Christine also coordinates various outreach activities to market the library including Scare Fest Halloween Vendor Fair, the library page on Facebook, and Campus Center Interventions. She has aided in deployment of cool tools for the library including a federated search, iGoogle gadget, and LibX toolbar. Prior to working at WPI Christine served as Manager of Instruction and Reference at Babson College in Wellesley, MA. She received her M.L.S. from Southern Connecticut State University in 1994. Her presentation entitled “Staying Current With Emerging Technologies” was given as part of the Massachusetts School Library Association Conference at Simmons College on April 26, 2008.
Anita Silvey is the author of 100 Best Books for Children and 500 Great Books for Teens. She has devoted 35 years to promoting books that will turn the young—and families—into readers. To do this she has appeared frequently on NPR, “The Today Show,” “60 Minutes,” and radio programs to talk about books for both children and teenagers. As publisher of children’s books for Houghton Mifflin Company from 1995-2001, she oversaw all the children’s book and young adult publishing for both the Houghton and Clarion lists. Prior to her role as publisher, Ms. Silvey served for eleven years as Editor-in-Chief of The Horn Book Magazine, a publication many call “the Bible of children’s literature.” As Editor of Horn Book, she read several thousand books a year, hunting for those of exceptional quality that children return to again and again.
Currently a member of the Editorial Board of Cricket Magazine and the Board of Directors for the Vermont Center for the Book, she teaches “Modern Book Publishing” at the Simmons GSLIS and “Children’s Book Author Studies” at St. Michael’s College in Burlington, Vermont. She is the Literature Consultant for the 2009 Houghton Mifflin Reading series. Her first children’s book, I’ll Pass for Your Comrade: Women Soldiers in the Civil War, will be published by Clarion Books in the fall of 2008.
Ms. Silvey has been given numerous awards, including The Women’s National Book Association Book Women Award. In January 2008 she received the Ludington Award from the Educational Paperback Association for her lifetime of work on behalf of children and books. Her presentation entitled “The Stories Behind the Classics” was given as part of the Massachusetts School Library Association Conference at Simmons College on April 26, 2008.
