Interests
Ben's interests are too diverse to completely list here, but they include library science, computing, and music. You can get better idea of who he is from his homepage.
Library Science
Ben is interested in many aspects of library science. While working at the Forbes Library he has become particularly interested in the history of cataloging and the influence of Charles Ammi Cutter.
Computing
Although Ben has never taken a computer science or programing class he has tinkered with Java, C++, and Perl as well as other programing languages. He has found that Perl is particularly well suited to work in the library where he has used it to reformat and extract data from ungainly reports and to scrape data from web pages and interact with cgi scripts.
Music
Ben is an amateur musician. Although he has studied many different instruments and musical styles he now devotes most of his practice time to the mandolin and the contra dance music of New England. He is also a competent bassoonist and enjoys playing that instrument in unusual settings as well as in more traditional chamber ensembles. Other instruments Ben has studied include the guitar, the octave mandolin, the five string banjo, the tin whistle, and the piano, though his familiarity with these instruments is fairly limited.
Ben studied music composition and theory in college, and occasionally still writes new music. His recent compositions have been fiddle tunes, such as Savoy Mountain.
