Vietnam: Developing Libraries for the 21st Century

Tuesday, December 12, 2006
1-2PM
Room P-207
Light refreshments will be provided (SUMMER ROLLS!)

Educated librarians play a critical role in creating and leading libraries in developing countries. Professor Patricia Oyler has been traveling to Vietnam and working with Vietnamese libraries since the early 1990’s. Most recently, she has been involved with an Atlantic Philanthropies grant that aims to prepare new librarians to work at five academic libraries in Vietnam. These librarians spent one semester at Simmons and will complete their MS in Vietnam with visiting LIS professors from around the world.

Professor Oyler will speak about the role that Simmons has played in developing the information infrastructure in Vietnam and how libraries have developed in Vietnam over the past 12 years. Topics to be covered will include a brief overview of academic, public, and special libraries as well as library education and the issues libraries face to continue their development.
