SLA Boston Chapter Student Essay Contest

The 2007 Special Library Association’s Annual Conference will be held in Denver, CO, from June 3-6. As an incentive for students to attend the conference, the SLA Boston Chapter is sponsoring an essay contest open to LIS students interested in a career in special librarianship. A stipend will be awarded to cover costs associated with attending the conference, including travel, lodging, meals, registration (including paid events and programs) and pre-conference workshops.

The SLA 2007 Annual Conference’s preview states "Make Your Future Happen at SLA 2007." Expanding on that theme, please use the essay to comment on how attending the SLA conference in Denver will support your studies in library and information science. What do you see in your future? What skills will you need? How will the special librarian's role be defined?

In order to apply for the stipend, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a member of the SLA Boston Chapter (Join SLA here.)
  2. Be enrolled in a graduate program in Library & Information Science at the time of application
  3. Submit an essay of 400-1000 words on what the theme of the conference means to you
  4. Submit a cover sheet providing: your name, address, phone number, email address, graduate program, name of school, and anticipated date of graduation
Previous winners of this contest are not eligible to receive this stipend

Please email your essay and cover sheet to: mailto:alicia.fasi@pioneerinvestments.com

Your application must be received by April 9, 2007. The essays will be judged on content and grammar- please do not use special formatting. The essays will be judged by members of the Boston Chapter’s executive board and student relations committee.

The winner will be notified by May 7, 2007. The stipend can only be applied towards attending the annual conference in Denver.

Free tuition for Continuing Education Course

Our student volunteer program was begun by SLA's Professional Development Center in 1997 at our conference in Seattle. We are glad to have the opportunity to continue the tradition this year by working with graduate students.

Interested students will be responsible for trouble-shooting during SLA's continuous education courses, and for helping the instructor hand out course materials, certificates of completion, evaluation forms, etc. In exchange for their help, students attend that course free of charge. This is a savings for the students of up to $345! We will not be covering housing, food and travel.

If so, the interested students should select a course from the list in SLA's Preliminary Conference Program. All SLA members should have already received a program in the mail. Students who have not received a program may visit SLA's website. To check out CE courses, click here.

If you have not registered online, please go into the online planner as a guest. Only select a Saturday or Sunday session that is presented by the "Click U Live".

Students should then contact SLA's Learning Coordinator:

Shelva Suggs
mailto:ssuggs@sla.org or
1-703-647-4925

to notify her of their selection. Courses will be assigned on a first come, first served basis (please list your top 3 choices). As we get closer to the conference dates, the volunteers will be contacted with full instructions and room assignment. They will also receive a notice regarding an onsite orientations tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 1, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. Again, the specifics will be issued directly to the student volunteers.

The deadline for all CE session requests are due to me by April 30, 2007.
