On October 28, 2008 the Simmons Student Chapter of the Society American Archivists sponsored an Archives Career Panel. The panelists discussed their experiences in the archives job market, expectations for new graduates in the profession, and gave advice on resumes and interviews. The speakers included Megan Sniffin-Marinoff, University Archivist and Co-Director of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University, Nora Murphy, Reference Archivist of the MIT Institute Archives and Special Collections, Donna Webber the College Archivist of Simmons College, Brenda Lawson, Director of Collections Services at the Massachusetts Historical Society, and India Spartz, Senior Archivist at the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. The panel was introduced and moderated by the Student Chapter of the Society American Archivists co-chair Melissa Gonzales.

On November 15, 2008 Ross Harvey gave the closing plenary for the New England Archivists’ Fall Meeting hosted at Simmons College. Ross is a visiting professor at Simmons who has worked around the world in the field of digital preservation of library and archival materials. He both summarized the main points addressed in the Fall Meeting and gave a presentation addressing the field’s changing needs and challenges as cultural heritage becomes increasingly digital heritage. He specifically tried to address what lessons can be learned from traditional archival practice and what new challenges lie ahead.

On November 15th, 2008 Amy Friedlander from the Council on Library and Information Resources presented her findings on issues related to managing preservation of resources to the New England Archivists Fall Meeting hosted at Simmons College. She discussed long term sustainability of digital materials, but also commented on how many decisions also concern institutional mission, priorities and decisions about resources and collections. On November 14, 2008 Rick Kerschner gave a lecture for the “Traditional Preservation” section of the New England Archivists Fall Meeting at Simmons College. He is the Director of the Preservation and Conservation at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. He also conducts research, lectures and consults on practical environmental control for collections housed in historic buildings, and teaches preventive conservation workshops for the American Association for State and Local History.
