GSLIS Information Session - Summer 2009

On June 3rd, 2009, the GSLIS Office of Admissions held an Information Session for interested students. Em Claire Knowles, Assistant Dean for Student Services did a short introduction. Sarah Petrakos, Assistant Dean for Admission and Recruitment moderated the panel. The Alumni Panelists included Andrea Medina-Smith, Alma Ramos-McDermott, and Jessica Reader.

Finding a Career through Branding

On May 9th, 2009, Simmons Continuing Education Program and SLA Boston co-sponsored a Career Program with Melissa Fristrom of Core Allies. In this program Melissa Fristrom teaches how to differentiate yourself and succeed in your career by creating a personal brand.

Archives Career Panel

On October 28, 2008 the Simmons Student Chapter of the Society American Archivists sponsored an Archives Career Panel. The panelists discussed their experiences in the archives job market, expectations for new graduates in the profession, and gave advice on resumes and interviews. The speakers included Megan Sniffin-Marinoff, University Archivist and Co-Director of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University, Nora Murphy, Reference Archivist of the MIT Institute Archives and Special Collections, Donna Webber the College Archivist of Simmons College, Brenda Lawson, Director of Collections Services at the Massachusetts Historical Society, and India Spartz, Senior Archivist at the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. The panel was introduced and moderated by the Student Chapter of the Society American Archivists co-chair Melissa Gonzales.

GSLIS Alumni Career Panel

On October 21, 2008 a panel of GSLIS Alumni spoke about their career paths and how their Simmons experience has helped them successfully manage and navigate their careers. The speakers were Ann Collins ‘86 the librarian at Brookline Public High School; Laura Straub ‘06, Collection Development Manager at the Boston Public Library; Thomas Blake ‘06, Digital Imaging Production Manager and Acting Digital Services Manager, also at the BPL; Diane d’Almeida ‘97, Bibliographer of Modern Foreign Language at the Mugar Library, Boston University; and Deanna Briggs ‘03, Medical Market Development Manager for EBSCO Publishing. The first speaker is Ann Collins. Kahlilah Gambrell moderated the discussion afterwards.
