Mobile Mania - Mobile Medical Applications - Michelle Kraft

On November 5, 2008 NEASIS&T sponsored an event at Simmons entitled Mobile Mania, which was designed to address the new challenges mobile devices pose for information service providers. Speakers were invited to share their experiences of developing innovative ways to deliver content and embed services within these new virtual environments. Michelle Kraft, a Senior Medical Librarian at the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library, and author of “The Krafty Librarian,” a blog for medical librarians, discussed mobile web issues specifically in the context of medical library technologies and applications.

Reality 2.0 - Developing your learning strategy for life after Grad School

Stephen Abram is the current President of the Special Libraries Association, the past-President of the Canadian Library Association, and Vice President of Innovation for the SirsiDynix Institute. The scope of his professional activities led Library Journal to recognize him as a “Mover and Shaker”, one of the “key” people influencing the future of libraries and librarianship. On Wednesday, March 26, 2008 he spoke to a group of students at Simmons College about strategies for keeping up with constantly changing technologies in the information field. The talk was sponsored by the Simmons and Boston chapters of the Special Libraries Association.

A Career in Library and Information Science: Strategies, Choices and Insights featuring Kathy Coolidge

Kathy Coolidge ’04 is the law librarian at Bulkley, Richardson & Gelinas, LLP. She manages all aspects of library operations, conducts legal research, and provides information services as requested by the firm’s 43 attorneys, 7 paralegals, and other staff in two offices. Prior to joining Bulkley, Richardson & Gelinas in December 2002, Kathy was associated for seventeen years with the law firm of Michael D. Parker, Esq. in Springfield, Massachusetts. She graduated from Carleton College in 1977, and from Western New England College School of Law in 1984. She has been admitted to the Massachusetts bar since January 1985. She is a member of the Simmons Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, and served as the treasurer for the Legal Division of SLA from 2005-07 and as the president-elect for the Connecticut Valley Chapter of SLA during its merger with the Boston Chapter. She currently serves on the Boston Chapter Board as the program planner for the Connecticut Valley Region and on the Finance Committee of SLA. Kathy has had articles published in Law Library Journal, AALL Spectrum, and other professional association newsletters. She contributed a chapter on solo law librarianship to A Day in the Life: Career Options in Library and Information Science edited by P. Schontz and R. Murray, Libraries Unlimited, 2007.

PLG Skillshare: A Crash Course in News Librarianship

John Aubrey graduated from the Master’s degree program at Simmons GSLIS in August 2007. During his time at Simmons, John focused his studies on special and corporate libraries, and he interned at the Boston-based Christian Science Monitor. On Saturday, September 22, he spoke about his experiences at the Monitor, and the continuing role of news libraries in the media landscape of the 21st century. John’s talk was part of the second annual GSLIS Skillshare, which was sponsored by the Simmons chapter of the Progressive Librarians Guild.

Careers in Art Librarianship

On Tuesday, July 17, five practicing art librarians were invited to Simmons College to speak about their experiences in the field and the future of their profession. The participants included Deborah Barlow Smedstad, the head librarian at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Rachel Beckwith, who currently works with Simmons GSLIS west program in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and is also a cataloger with Artstor, Robert Burton, a photographic cataloger at the Weissman Preservation Center at Harvard University, Brooke Henderson, an art librarian at Wellesley College, and Rachel Resnik, a technical services librarian at the Massachusetts College of Art. The career panel event was sponsored by Panopticon, a GSLIS student group focusing on visual resources librarianship, and by the New England chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America.
