On April 17, 2009 Simmons GSLIS hosted its Alumni Day, featuring a special afternoon program honoring the life of Professor Allen Smith. The program included a lecture on the future of reference by Brian Mathews, the user experience librarian at Georgia Tech. His talk was titled, “Libraries and the Inspiration Business: How Can We Make a Difference in the Lives of our Patrons.”

On April 8, 2009 Simmons GSLIS held their Advising Day for incoming GSLIS students beginning their program in June of 2009. Throughout the day several faculty members provided important information about the advising process, course offerings, and several campus services. Michelle Cloonan began the day with a brief talk on the importance of education on preservation of our cultural heritage in wake of the recent natural disaster in Italy.

The morning started of with a welcome from Dean Michèle Cloonan, followed by an awards presentation honoring the 2009 GSLIS Alumni Achievement Award recipient Dr. Sarah Thomas, Class of 1973, Bodley’s librarian and director at Oxford University Library Services. Dr. Thomas then gave the keynote address on “Being Bodley’s Librarian.”
