[edit] Meetings

Monday September 21, 2pm, Java City

Topics/Notes:

  • Division of content based on schedules.
  • Plan timeline to proceed.
  • Initial division of content:
  • Biography - Sarah
  • Simmons at the time period - Liz
  • Boston at the time period - Annie
  • Teaching resources - Liz, Annie and Sarah

Wednesday October 14, 1pm, Java City

Topics/Notes: (notes taken by Sarah - please add information I may have forgotten.)

  • Content discovered so far in our research
  • Annie has been reading about events and society in Boston during Helyar's time; Sarah has been learning about Helyar's biography; Liz has been reading about the history of Simmons
  • New goals for content research and development:
  • Liz will research the history of Simmons and focus in detail on its library science program (including the teachers affiliated with the program at Helyar's time and the classes she took). She will also learn as much as possible about library science as a discipline at that time. Why were these classes considered important? Who were her teachers?
  • Annie will look into the places and people Helyar knew and visited in Vermont, and learn as much as possible about the materials from Vermont found in the scrapbook. She will also transcribe some of Helyar's handwritten songs, and research the performances, pieces, and music venues for which Helyar has programs. She may also work on a note about Henry James's book Daisy Miller - what a fun coincidence that Helyar's name was the same as that of a protagonist created by a novelist with strong Boston ties.
  • Sarah will continue to gather information for a biographical sketch. She will also research the history of Valentines and other holiday cards. She will look into scarlet fever and the typhoid fever, with a focus on the outbreaks that happened in Boston while Helyar was at Simmons. She will also transcribe the menus in the scrapbook and contact the North Bennet Street School to find out if they have any record of Helyar's time working there.
  • We will begin to use the discussion page to collect a bibliography of resources relevant to specific topics and to begin writing topical short essays on our subjects.
  • Some learning resources we would like to discuss with classmates: a scrapbook collage activity, an interactive map of Boston or Vermont, Valentine e-cards, a sing-a-long feature for some of the songs.

Wednesday October 28, 1PM, Java City

Notes:

  • discussed ongoing research of various topics
  • determined to keep History of Simmons and Library Science of Simmons separate
  • all 3 of us still working on turning notes into essays for various topics
  • discussed how to divide up the About, Help and Curricular sections
  • Sarah will look into how scrapbook page will fit in with Mass. school curricularum.
  • Annie will take a picture of the class at a future date.
  • Annie and Liz will work on the About and Help pages.
  • Annie will contact Web Team about map feature for website.
  • Content official due date is November 5th - we will begin linking topical documents to the content discussion page ASAP.

Nov. 12th - all content and teaching resources ready to hand to metadata team

[edit] Notes

[edit] Note 9/24

  • We will be doing extensive original research, but a good deal of our content - especially biographical content - will be generated by the materials discovered by our classmates in the process of scanning. We will need to maintain good channels of communication.
  • Some cool features that may be possible: maps of sites relevant to Hellyar's life (places she visited in Boston, e.g.), small exhibits of particular types of item (dance cards, e.g.) accompanied by subject-specific notes

[edit] Note 9/28

  • Class: Please use this Content Notes page to inform us of any interesting content you discover in the course of scanning your pages. Some things you might want to consider noting: specific geographic locations Hellyar visited, activities she seemed to enjoy, trips she took, classes or subjects she seemed to enjoy, etc. If it jumps out at you, it is interesting to us! Please make note of the relevant page numbers and your name.
