9/30 Confirmed Move Date: Thursday 9/29 Wendy tested scanner in tech lab
10/1 Heard from preservation committee: "The current archival standards for file format are TIFF and resolution is 4000 to 6000 pixels across the longest dimension." I.e., scanned image should be between 4000 and 6000 pixels on its longest side. This means scanning resolutions (dpi or ppi) will vary depending on the size of the original images. Page 28 of the Western States "Best Practices" document illustrates the concept well. We'll have to set up guidelines correlating image sizes with dpi's.
10/1 Confirmed move date: Thursday 10/2 and 10:00 am.
10/2 Scanner moved to archive with laptop. Software on laptop is Adobe with scan utility. Will try to have instructions by 10/09 to present to class Target date to start scanning 10/13. Target date to end scanning 11/1
10/4 Scanning instructions drafted (J.P.).
10/5 Got info from Preservation committee re: file sizes. "Access- JPEG, 600 pixels across longest dimension. Thumbnail-JPEG, 150-200 pixels across longest dimension."
10/7 Heard from Jason that tech people were having difficulties with install of software and would be coming to work on it this afternoon. Need to get update from Jason on Wed. 10/8.
10/08 Software has been successfully installed on archive laptop. JP tested this afternoon. JP wrote master file scanning instructions. EB and WB met from 4:30-6:00 to discuss agenda items for 10/09 class. EB emailed Jason about putting scanning times up on the wiki for next week.
10/09 EB met with Jason Wood who said he we could start scanning Wednesay 10/15. He'll post time slots in wiki calendar either this afternoon or this evening. EB and WB reported to class current status and explanation of derivative files. Candy told us our class now has a folder space in the Y-drive (go to Public, to LIS 462) where everyone's files will eventually be stored. EB did a trial run of scanning with instructions. Set up another trial run with Joyce and Marie-Helene at the archives for Friday 9:00 - 9:30am. Final draft of instructions to be posted to our wiki before scanning begins on Wed. 10/15. Also need to email them to Candy (she wants to look them over first).
10/10 Jason posted time slots for scanning appointments for next week. EB met with Joyce and Marie-Helene at Archives to test scanning instructions. Had an issue with saving to Joyce's Y drive because file was too large and she had reached her quota. Resolved issue by saving to LIS462 folder on the public drive. EB found out from helpdesk that there is no quota on public drive folder (yay!). EB revised instructions as per their suggestions and sent to WB and JP for review.
10/11 WB completed draft of editing instructions. JP completed draft of naming files instructions. Ensuing discussion over email of naming system.
10/14 Ran finalized scanning instructions by Candy and posted to wiki. Created folders for everyone in the Public drive folder. Continued discussion and progress re: instructions for naming files.

11/13 Announced a Thanksgiving deadline for all images. Jason will no longer be posting scanning times and people will need to contact him directly if they still need to scan. Three people had not posted images in their folders.
11/18 Cropping of whole page master TIFF was raised by multiple students. Should they crop image if scanner bed is showing? Email discussion with Preservation resulted in new instructions for cropping the whole page TIFF files.
