[edit] Questions for the Class
(I thought it might be good to start thinking about some of the broader areas we might want to cover in our survey for the class. Feel free to add your own before Thursday. RW)
Metadata
What metadata are presented along with the digital object? What level of granularity is represented (are individual items in the scrapbook described or just the scrapbook as a whole)? What are the strengths/ weaknesses of the metadata presented?
User interface/ page delivery service
How are images presented? How is the scrapbook navigated (page-turning, Flash, etc)? How can users navigate within a page (zooming vs. clicking on an image to view a larger version of it)? How is the physical layout of the scrapbook represented digitally? What is done with overlapping items, multi-page items, folding items? Are fancy graphics worth a slower loading time?
Image quality/ image options
Do users have the option to view different image formats? Are images color or black and white?
Information retrieval
What searching options are available? Searching vs. Browsing? Is one better than the other? Are both necessary? Why?
Contextual and historical background
What contextual information is provided that goes beyond descriptive metadata? Is this information useful? Is it too much or too little?
