Naming Files

GENERAL FORMAT: 000-00x-0.ext

SEGMENT 1: Three digit page number

SEGMENT 2: Two digit numeric identifier to distinguish component items on a scrapbook page. If the item has more than one side or page, these are identified by a lowercase letter (a letter is not required if there is only one side or page to be scanned). Images showing the full scrapbook page are assigned 00 in the second segment.

SEGMENT 3: One digit code indicating the size of the image (1 = 800 dpi, 2 = 600 pixels, 3 = 300 pixels)

FILE EXTENSION: .tif for TIFF (master file) or .jpg for JPEG (derivative access files)

SHORT EXAMPLE: The 600 pixel access image of the inside of a greeting card that is the second item on page 61 of the scrapbook would be assigned the file name 061-02b-2.jpg.

FULL EXAMPLE: Page 61 of the scrapbook has two greeting cards mounted on it, both of which can be opened to reveal the inside. The full list of files would then be:

Master TIFF Images (preservation):

  • 061-00a-1.tif (800 dpi master TIFF image of the page showing the front of the cards)
  • 061-00b-1.tif (800 dpi master TIFF image of the page showing the inside of the cards)

Working TIFFs (cropped from masters and used to create derivative JPEGs):

  • 061-01a-1.tif (800 dpi TIFF image of the page showing the front of the first card)
  • 061-01b-1.tif (800 dpi TIFF image of the page showing the inside of first card)
  • 061-02a-1.tif (800 dpi TIFF image of the page showing the front of second card)
  • 061-02b-1.tif (800 dpi master TIFF image of the page showing the inside of second card)

Derivative JPEG Images (used for access):

Full page:

  • 061-00a-1.jpg (800 dpi JPEG access image)
  • 061-00a-2.jpg (JPEG access image, 600 pixels along the longest side)
  • 061-00a-3.jpg (JPEG access image, 300 pixels along the longest side)

Card #1 in closed position:

  • 061-02a-1.jpg (800 dpi JPEG access image of the front of the first card)
  • 061-01a-2.jpg (JPEG access image of the front of the first card, 600 pixels along the longest side)
  • 061-01a-3.jpg (JPEG access image of the front of the first card, 300 pixels along the longest side)

Card #1 in open position:

  • 061-01b-1.jpg (800 dpi JPEG access image of the inside of the first card)
  • 061-01b-2.jpg (JPEG access image of the inside of the first card, 600 pixels along the longest side)
