This article talks about the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) and using METS as a metadata transfer XML schema that OAI harvesters can harvest.

This article gives a relatively simple explanation of PREMIS, including the process by which it was created/agreed upon.

This article talks about how some PREMIS fields overlap with fields in METS, but METS can also be used as a "container" for PREMIS.

This is the data dictionary for Metadata for Images (MIX) version 1.0.

PREMIS stands for PREservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies. It is a working group that includes people from the Library of Congress and OCLC, among others, and they have developed an XML metadata schema for preservation metadata.
