[edit] Basic Wiki Things
Clicking on colored words or numbers will open a link.
Red Leads to a stub (i.e. a page with nothing in it)
Blue Leads to a page that already contains information
Blue words or number with an arrow (like this) will take you to an external link.
[edit] How to edit a page
- There is a blue "edit" tab at the top of any wiki page, as well as an edit link at the top of every section within the page. Click on any of those in order to get to the edit section.
- Use an asterix (*) to make a bulleted list. (**, ***, ****, ...etc.) will create sub-bullets.
- Use a pound sign ( # ) to make a numbered list. (##, ####, ####, ...etc.) will create sub-numbers.
- Using two single quotes (") on each side of a word will make it italicized and three single quotes will make the word bold.
- Put two brackets ( ) on each side of a word/phrase that you would like to turn into an internal link within the Wiki. i.e. link. When you use brackets to refer to an existing page it will create a link to that page. You can create a totally new page (a stub) by putting a word or title in brackets.
- Put one bracket ([ ]) around a URL that you would like to make an external link.
- To make a subsections within a page, use the following format:
- =Largest=
- ==Slightly smaller==
- ===Smaller===
- ====Smallest====
- To strike out a line
like this, use this format : <s> word </s> - To make a word red, blue, green, or some other color, use the following format: <font color="red"> word </font>
By starting one or more spaces in you can create a box like the one surrounding this text.
[edit] Images
this is a screenclip of an OAIster search
- To upload an image, click the “Upload file” link in the toolbox on the left hand side of the screen. Fill in the necessary information.
- To insert a full size image in a page, use the following format:
- To insert a caption below the image, use the following format
- To make the image a "thumbnail" size, use the following format:
- To specify the size of the image, set a number of pixels using the number of pixels and then "px," such as "20px" or "600px." The format is as follows:
[edit] Files
- Uploading other files (for example, pdf or word documents) is the same as uploading an image file (see above)
- To insert a document in a page, use the following format:
[edit] Helpful Wiki Hints
- When you log in to the wiki, your username will appear at the top right of the screen. If you click on your username, you will see that it is an editable page like any other. Because it will always be at the top of the screen, this is a good place to keep a list of pages on the wiki that you use most often. For example, I have links to the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Preservation Committee in my username wiki page.
- When editing a page, it's always a good idea to use the "show preview" option before saving your changes.
- If you ever lose track of a wiki page, you can go to the "All Pages" page to see a list in alphabetical order of all of the pages on this site. To get there, go to the toolbox on the left-hand side of the page and click on the "special pages" link. "All pages" is near the top of the list of special pages.
- Links are case-sensitive, so please be careful when linking to or creating pages (i.e. Preservation Metadata will link to a different page that preservation metadata, so you could end up making multiple pages with duplicate information).
- When you make (and therefore create) a new page, please give it a name that won't duplicate names that other people/groups would use -- i.e. name a page Context and Content Committee meetings rather than just Meetings and October 17, 2008 Preservation committee meeting minutes rather than October 17, 2008 meeting minutes.
- It can be helpful to add navigation links in the pages you create. For example, in a page named Context and Content Committee meetings, it could be helpful to make a link on the page back to Content and Context Committee.
