[edit] SECOND ANNUAL GSLIS SKILL SHARE!
Saturday, September 22
10am-3pm
Simmons College
TOTALLY FREE and OPEN TO EVERYONE
[edit] What's a Skill Share?
There are a lot of things you can learn in library school. But there are a lot of other things that you're unlikely to learn, because the classes being taught at any given time reflect the research interests of the faculty AND what happens to be fashionable in the LIS profession. The second annual GSLIS Skill Share is based on the belief that we as students have a lot that we can teach one another, based on our personal and professional experiences beyond the classroom. We, the organizers, aren't willing to wait until we're accorded the status of "real professionals" in order to start shaping the priorities of OUR profession. We are ready to start making a difference now.
At the heart of the Skill Share will be seven exciting workshops taught by GSLIS students and alumni. We've also invited Eli Guinnee and Amy Buckland, co-editors of Library Student Journal, to kick off the event with a keynote address. As professional journals go, Library Student Journal is as DIY as they come: student-initiated, student-edited, and a proud supporter of Open Access. Eli and Amy will talk to us about getting the journal off the ground and about what role they see it playing in the publishing landscape of the years to come.

[edit] What else do I need to know?
Parking around the Simmons campus is scarce, which means that you'll probably want to take public transportation. You can take the Green "E" line to the Museum stop, turn right on Louis Prang St., and walk for 5 minutes until you reach the Simmons Main College Building on the left.
Unfortunately, the second annual GSLIS Skill Share will be taking place during the observance of Yom Kippur. PLG regrets this scheduling conflict, and pledges to take the holidays of the Jewish calendar into account when planning future events. However, students who are observing Yom Kippur–or who may not be able to attend the Skill Share for other reasons–will be able to download the keynote address, as well as selected workshops, in the form of a podcast. Podcast recording is courtesy of the GSLIS Technology Lab.
